Probably not something I'd advise to anyone else.
A snails tank is a controlled environment, humidity/temperature wise. You wouldnt let a newt run across you livingroom carpet... same caution should be taken with snails.
Theres also the concern that a snail may fall to a hard surface, and subsequently recieve shell damage.
These animals are not hamsters or cats, theyre a soft bodied creature and some species have quite specific humidity and temperature requirements. You cant (in my opinion) try to turn them into this sort of pet.
If it works for you great, but anyone else who might consider this to be a good idea, think long and hard. It doesnt really benefit the animal at all, and it really isnt advisable.

I would have thought it would have been better to get the ventilation etc sorted before using the tank, the first thing I do when I know I'm getting any new snails is to get the tank ready for their requirements before getting them not after! For example I have just got back from shopping to get stuff for my Lignus tank even though they won't be ready for 2-3 weeks then when they arrive they can move straight in.

Cats have a habit of sitting where they shouldn't don't they our's sits on top of my rabbit run so the wire on that now dips in from all the times he's tried to work out how to catch what's inside, mind you my rabbits would probably get him before he got them.
