Hi all, new member! Does anyone here have any information about Velvet slugs? Mine have laid eggs, which were clear, but now (3 days later) have gone cloudy. They have been laid on the surface of the substrate, rather than buried, as seems normal with other slugs and snails. Hope someone can help. (Can't even find out genus, let alone species!) Thanks

Thanks Welcome to the forum! .... About the egg's, maybe they go cloudy as they develop? Im not sure though, and theres very little information on keeping and rearing slugs available online Ive noticed, almost nonexistent information on breeding and rearing them from eggs I had Velvet Slugs a whille back, dont know the species...I now have Barbados Pancake Slugs, how many Velvet Slugs have you got? you got any other species also?

I have 6 adults, and they've laid about 80 eggs. Did yours breed? If so, did they not bury their eggs? I thought that maybe the eggs are infertile as they didn't bury them, but there are two distinct 'strings', laid almost side by side, so perhaps they are fertile. I also have 6 Pancake slugs, which I assume are Veronicella sloanei, (nearest pics I have found, and I'm not about to dissect for positive ID!)

Mine didnt breed...they were the first, non-british slugs I kept, sadly they didnt live that long, I must have done something wrong, and am rather ashamed they didnt live long and breed to be honest...I have 2 Pancake Slugs, im sure they're Veronicella Sloanei too, Where did you get your slugs if you dont mind me asking? (pm me if you like) Ive found them for sale not very often,

No, that's a pancake slug I think. Velvet slugs are matt brown and 'sticky', not slimey like other slugs.

Mine are a cream colour, with mottled grey markings. They are nearly as wide as they are long, (about 8cms x 5cms). They have purpley-grey eye stalks (what are they called?), and a deeper cream stripe on the underside.

My brother has bought a new camera today, so hopefully I can post pics of mine later today...Mine must be the same species as yours, as they sound very similar

Look what I just found!!: www.kowal.force9.co.uk/Slugs/slugs1.htmThis page can't be found from the main page so I am not promising anything. It may be worth trying to order them though. Also, I've emailed them asking for every genus of snail I can think of and I've asked about slugs, in particular banana slugs so it probably ain't worth using the "search facility". I'll post the response as soon as I get one.

Do you want me to sit in the corner and rust, or just fall apart where I'm standing?

I can't believe they are asking £7 each for them! They are easy to care for, and if mine are anything to go by, easy to breed, (although I might be jumping the gun re. eggs actually hatching).
