ok dont get angry at me for this....but... last night i dropped my tiger and the apex broke off, about 3 whorls in. it didnt drop off because the insides were keeping it on there, but it was broken all the way round and theres a crack down the shell. the snail eventually came back out and started sliming around as normal, but her body seemed very flaccid, and when i held the shell up, the body hung out. my mum says the vaccuum in the shell was destroyed, and then it worried me, what if the visceral hump has disconnected from the inside of the shell wall. will it dry and shrivel? for now ive covered it all in brown tape, snail seems ok, but this is only temporary. achatina.ru/Other/Cure-En.htmi found this and so it seems possible to solve the problem. i went to the hardware store and got some epoxy resin. i think he means put plaster of paris on it, then cover it with the epoxy resin. but i cudnt find plaster of paris. Nat, I know you've done this before, could you send me some plaster of paris? and some advice on how to do this? kind regards mike

Mikey, have you got a poundshop near you? In the toy section they sell these kits to make umm fridge magnets or photo frames or door plaques and stuff like that. In the kits is a bag of plaster of paris ....... DA DAAA - sorted.

Mike, for now, why not get some epoxy resin glue and some gause or material. Soak the material in resin, allow it to start getting hard and then press in place. It'll do the job, perhaps not as well as plaster but if you need to do a quick job I'd suggest that.
One question for those who'cve used plaster. It gives off major heat when it is hardening, does this not affect the snail at all?

I make sure the plaster doesn't touch the snails insides at all. I actually didn't know it gave off heat as it dried, but in my case the inside of the broken bit of the shell was all dried up and crusty. I didn't see any adverse reaction from the snail though.
How hot does it get exactly? Enough to burn??

Mike, Firstly, why would we be angry? Accidents happen, not as if you deliberatly threw it. I'll send you some P of P tomorrow. As for advice I don't know I have never repaired one with actual flesh showing. Your braver than me. I would panic. Paul - I didn't know it gave off heat at all. I certainly haven't noticed it and it was touching the actual plaster loads, and had it dry on my hands. The plaster I use comes in kids plaster and paint sets, Maybe its slightly different because it is safe for kids to use? Like Anjie though, it never touched any flesh only the shell. Nat

It doesn't give off loads of heat, but in a confined space it can get quite warm, possibly even hot. But no problems with it so far, I was just asking out of curiosity.

lol. Wouldn't ever be angry Mike! I dropped Sid twice in a row the other day! OMG I felt stupid, and guilty. He's fine tho. A bit of the new shell growth broke of but it almost completly healed within a day.

Just some more ideas...one of the best materials for shell repair is a piece of shell...hmmm its easy to get the aquatic shells as when the snails die they get pulled out of their shells and scoffed and all we do is use snips cut out a bigger piece of shell than the hole and super glue into place..being carefull not to get get glue onto the skin...egg shells can be used too..we once repaired our snail with marine epoxy resin it was purple LOL it worked realy well but unfortunatly we put to much on and when he tried to mate his lady friend he suffered a collapsed mantle due to his shell being to heavy..its a mistake you do once then never again That repair Anjie has done is very very good .
