I know how you feel, it's very distressing when they fall ill isn't it... What kind of mites? The small fast ones that live on the snail's body or the fat slow ones that live on snail poo and moist food?

The ones that live on the snails

Did they fall ill after the mat broke or did the mat just add to your problems?
It sounds like you are keeping them warm enough, the flaccid fulica sounds asphyxiated, perhaps it isn't able to breathe as well 'cos of the mites in its air hole. I clean the mites of my natives by dunking them in water to get them off before they hide in the snail's lung but I have been so far unable to get rid of them, what you need are them predataory mites that Paul used. Thats all I can think of.

The heat mat added to the problems luckily it was just the fuse blown so i've got it working again now.
My first ever snail Roxy is suffering the worst, shes lost half her body weight and is too weak to do anything, i've just been and bought some porridge so i'm gonna make some up and try it.

oh i'm sorry sarah that sounds horrific maybe you could prepare a seperate tank with capillary matting, a water bowl and some food. put a few snails in this seperate tank, bathe them every day, wake them up and try feeding them, and see if this helps?

Do you need to keep them warm? None of my snails are 'heated' what temperature is your room at, that they are in? I am wondering if these mites need a certain temperature, and as snails aren't hugely fussy you may lose some that way. Are they in tanks with NO substrate and decor? Bathing them daily? I am really sorry, don't know what to suggest otherwise. Never had mites. Good luck, I hope they pull through. Nat

I'm really sorry to hear about this . I was gutted with 4 ill ones, never mind so many. I find it hard to believe that this problem is caused by mites unless they are the Ricardoella mites that are fatal. Normal mites can be limited with bathing and changing the substrate and I know of people who've suffered terrible outbreaks without fatalities. The problem sounds like the retraction problem though why 23 snails are down I don't know. Sarah, I have pm'd you with details of this retraction problem, so you can assess if you think it is that.

I believe I said so in the thread "Mite Problem" I hope that they are now in a different tank. Pleeeese stop crying and DO something !!!! Val

Fantastic news! When i fed the three sick snails last night i decided to put in a brand new piece of cuttlefish and to my surprise they all came over and started eating it :-) they sat eating it for at least half an hour then i went to bed cuz it was 11.55pm and when i got up this morning and checked them there was quite a bit missing, just hope they eat some food too soon, it's a shame about Roxy she was just too weak i don't think it helped laying eggs not long before, but i have found a replacement for her, i am adopting one from college, i'll probably get a slightly bigger one about 9cm to go with Rex (he misses her) and hes 9cm, although knowing me i'll probably bring back more than one hehe!

One of the very sick snails started eating the other day :-) still really skinny but hope he keeps eating and putting on weight, as for the other hes still not eaten and just retracts, i really hope he starts eating soon as he is one of my favourites, they are only eight months old and i have named them now so they have to pull through! Heres a pic of the two sick ones... and heres a pic of one sick one (right) next to a healthy one (left) you can see the body difference... they have got a little worse since these pics where taken
