Don't know if I'm putting the thread on the right place now but well... I think I read somewhere here a person saying that the snails can't drown unless it's to deep. Well, I can honestly say that it's not true. One of my baby smithii drowned yesterday R.I.PNamnlös (nameless)

Well, at least he got to drown in food instead of water. Heh... I had given them a plate of gruel, not to deep. But the plate was moved, probably by one of the fulicas, so all the gruel was in one place and then it got to deep for him... I'm never putting a plate of "floting" food in for them again like that, from now on they only eat that food under my watch!

Sorry for your loss, he was a cute lil guy I'm confused though. It must have been too deep for him if he drowned, right? Being a baby his air hole would be lower. So the too deep thing is true, it just depends how old the snail is, as to how high up the air hole is?

Exacly what I'm saying (It wasn't to deep at first, but then another snail must have moved the plate so it went like... not straight or however you say it in english. And beacuse of that the gruel went to a smaller space and went deeper instead and there he drowned. Poor little thing )

*Blink* I must be in strange mode, 'cause that still doesn't make sense. And it's not the language btw, I understand what you mean perfectly, just not this lol. Sorry!
You said that the thing about snails drowning when it's too deep wasn't true. But it is, because yours didn't drown until the gruel had been moved around which made it too deep for it.
So... what, was exactly what you were saying? What is getting lost in translation so to speak? lol

Was he kept in with larger snails because sometimes when the smaller snail goes into the water a larger one can come along and climb on top of the smaller one pushing the airhole under the water and the smaller one will drown

I mean that they can drown if it's to deep for them.

Ah. Well that's what was confusing me, as you said "it's not true" and I was thinking...huh My fault, I should have just asked if you'd written that by mistake. Doh. Again sorry for your loss.

I don't really think it's a good idea to put babies in with larger snails. As Sarah said a larger snail could push him down into the liquid. Also it is probably best to avoid liquid food with tiny baby snails unless they are being watched.

I have my babies (2-4cm) in with my larger fulica (7-9cm) but a have a tray (1cm deep) in my tank with water about half a cm deep which they absolubtly love to get in and crawl around in which is quite impossible for them to drown as the water doesn't come any higher than the top of the smallest snails head and the fulica aren't bothered about going into the water at all.

With my babies (when I remember to put the water bowl in) I was going to put some small stones (i.e gravel maybe) in it so as they still get the water but it isn't too deep for them. The smallest bowl I have for them you see, is way too deep as it is.
