Recently I've noticed that Igby sits in his water dish while he's out and about in his tank- he'll even drag food in with him to eat with his body in the water. I though he just liked it but this morning I'm sure he was drinking out of the dish. Is this common? Is his tank too dry? I've tried to keep the tank as damp as possible-I have a simple reptile hygrometer and it sits around or just below the 'humid' mark most of the time. Any Ideas? thanks

He seems to only sit in there to eat for some reason. I wonder if he just likes the feeling?

I don't know what just under humid means in relative humidity terms, but you can do a simple experiment. Reduce ventilation and see how he responds. If you are using a plastic pet-pal for instance, clingfilm over the tank and under the lid (thanks emma!), that will help immensely. That's what I do, if ever I am worried I try it out and see how they respond. It does sound like he wishes it was a little bit more humid. Certain tanks aren't humid no matter how wet they are inside because there have so many holes, the pet-pal type in particular in my experience. If you get a positive reponse, you can see about getting the balance right by only covering a certain amount of holes.

that makes a lot of sense cos a the moment he only has some tights streched over the lid to keep him in. stupid me Maplins have a brilliant fog maker that they say can be used in a vivarium. (The ones that turn normal water into vapour using only vibration-no chemicals!) Do you think this might be a good plan? they are only £14

he needs the wramth too though, a heat mat should provide heat and humidity, try making a lid from perspex or something, and a tank that is sprayed regularly will become humid from the heat mat itself.

I have a heat mat on for him but I think its actually drying the tank out rather than causing humidity

and are you spraying regularly and keeping the substrate damp by actually tipping a bit of water onto it?

I have heard those foggers break pretty easily. If you reduce ventilation slightly you won't need one, quite the opposite I imagine.

Oops, meant to update you on this! I reduced the ventilation LOADS using clingfilm with a few ventilation holes. Then I did what Sarah suggested and soaked the substrate with water. I already sprayed regularly so I've been keeping that up. Well, the humidity shot up to 80/85% and Igby is loving it. He's out and about and seems happy (you know what I mean ) He's still drinking out of the bowl but he isn't sitting in it anymore, Problem Solved! Now if I could stop him hangin out of his shell when he's asleep like a big bogey.....

I'd been watching that thread to see what happened. Sorry 'bout your snail I'm pretty sure Igby is just asleep though, he wakes up fine and scoots about fast also if I tap the tank beside him he yanks his eyes/stalks back in sharpish. I wonder if he's actually awake but just lazing in the heat beside the heat mat. I'll keep an even more paranoid eye on him I think.

If mine can sleep hanging on the side of the tank then yours can sleep looking like a booger Leave the poor thing alone, you're probably denting his confidence saying he's booger snail! Rofl. He might be showing off for the ladies, even if there's none around lol.

i noticed humidity can have a lot of affect on snails. i started spraying the tanks twice a day and they seem more active, and one snail who was being retracted and lifeless starting moving around again... ;D

yeah I've definitly saw a change in his activity and general 'awakeness' His tank feels all steamy when I open it up now. It's quite nice.
