Has it been eating? In my experience if they look abnormally far back in the shell, it is actually malnutrition, their body-size shrinks. Young ones tend to die sooner than the older ones, which can lose a massive amount of body-size. My advice is to make sure it is eating. If it is, I don't think you have much to worry about. If it isn't you just have to keep trying until they do eat or die.
My Megalobulimus baby scared me last week, I found him quite retracted and I knew it was because of him not eating properly, no matter what I try. Well the good news is that I got him out to feed and he ate like a trooper, put the weight back on and within days was back to normal with the added bonus of him now eating more food regularly. So the symptom isn't necessarily the problem I and others have had with other snails, most of which died. However, I have had 2 immaculata, one baby, one adult that have pulled through that illness and are doing great again.
So, check the eating and get back to us. Hopefully I can give you better advice. The deep retraction problem is still a mystery as there is no set pattern to it. I think it is the symptom of a variety of problems, one of which I think may be viral. How long is it since you introduced new snails of any type or source to it? In fact, if it isn't eating at all, try and get back to me with as many details as possible and I'll try and advise. There is quite a comprehensive description of the problems I had in the problem section of the website, but I don't wish to jump the gun and scare you so I'm always a little reluctant to mention it. But at the very least it will give you some symptoms to look out for.

It's O.K. He is out now and eating well!! I panicked a bit as I have never seen one so far back, I think that in this case he may have been just a little traumatised by the journey and then being put into a strange environment. Thanks for info though Paul. Val
