Hello,
So, i just saw my fulica chewing on himself? I don't know if he was really chewing but I don't think snails can have an itch?
Why did he do this? There was food so he couldn't have been starving.

If he has a permanent calcium source in the tank, such as a cuttlefish bone or pure limestone flour, then he was probably just doing some shell maintenance. Smoothing out the edges, and such. It's a healthy activity and nothing to worry about as long as he's not breaking off actual pieces of the shell.

Just as etana says, it's normal behaviour and he was probably smoothing his shell or cleaning himself.

I've noticed my snails doing the same- usually they're just cleaning epiphragm off of themselves after aestivation. Nothing to worry about, but very cute to watch.
