I know this is a silly question, but was wondering - is it normal for babies to retract all the way inside their shell, then come out now and again?
Just wondering whether it's a precursor to dying, because one of our babies did this today, he's currently half heartedly eating some lettuce, so I just wondered if it's "normal"?
I have no experience with tiny babies so I'm probably being a clucky mother ;D

do you mean the mantle retracts beyond the edge of the shell?

Yes, the whole body retracts, so it's just clear shell up until where he's retracted to.

Oooh 2cm max, probably 1.5cm. Kathy's is slightly larger. Taken yesterday - mine's the bottom one.

He did come out to eat a little last night, but this morning he was partly retracted, only a few mm, but he was reluctant to come out too. Took some pics as there's quite an obvious size difference now. The bigger one (Kathy's - at the top in the photo) is much more active too.
