Good evening, I have this question in my mind from long, and now that my most beloved snail reached adulthood, I think is the right time to post it.. In order to keep my snail in good health, is mating required? are there many problems relating to mating, for example will it weaken them a lot? or is it suggested to let them mate in order to preserve good health, how important is it for the "happiness" of the snail ? She's a cornu aspersum, thank you for all your suggestions!

I don’t know about actually mating, but Cornu aspersums do very much enjoy the company of other snails (they are rather social).

I searched for some friend for her for long, but i don't feel comfortable in kidnapping a random wild snail that is living her happy life.. so i had to wait to find some snails to "help" (at least that were facing some kind of troubles). with the incoming winter I found some: several guys use to crawl over my car in the night from their bushes, and in recent colder days, I found several are crawling actually into the car, and going to sleep into the gaps of the car's doors (so the danger of crashing them is of the 99%), I got only 2 very small ones, as I cannot host them all unfortunately! I also found (same time, one month ago) a super tiny guy on a leaf that was abt to be thrown away by the gardener, measuring like 2-3 mm diameter at most, so I kept her too! I hope im doing a good service for them, as expecially the last one, is so small that to pass the winter would have been a great challenge!

You do not need to feel bad for a capturing a wild snail, so long as you plan to take proper care of it. Unless it's a species with a really specialized diet and husbandry requirements.

It won't affect its' life if it doesn't have babies. It'll still live as long as it would if it does have babies. Snails are independent, but they can be social. If you keep her without another snail, she won't die sooner or anything like that. They just appear more active when others are around and sometimes do things together.

I agree with snerdahmik, I don’t think it effects lifespan, but I do know that my snails are social and are more active when they are with other snails. They often do things together and hang out with each other.

That's nice! And anyway I was blessed with 3 guys this autumn, so now the total number is 4, they are all aspersum and they ll be fine i think! Yes I surely want them to live at the best that is possible, and im taking care of them super carefully! Did you ever experienced any "conflict behaviours" amongst them?

In fact, the ones I raise keep trying to mate. They always share their food, even with the tiny bradybaena similaris I keep in the same tank. They also like to piggyback on each others' shells and sleep together. They've never had ANY sort of aggressive behavior towards one another.
