hello, lately my snail has been looking rather inflated. He has been staying on top of the lid on his box a lot and his shell sort of just droops down in relaxation because he sleeps on top of his lid. He ends up looking really inflated and i am very worried. He is a common garden snail here in Europe. When he starts moving he goes some what back to normal buy he still looks too balloned.

Is the body or mantle the bloated part? Just the mantle looks inflated It could be mantle collapse.. there isn't much you can do if it is. I'll link some posts with information that may help later today.

If the mantle is swollen then he could be lacking in moisture or bearing eggs, my knowledge doesn’t really go further then that on mantle swelling.

this swollen mantle topic seems to be very common for Cornu aspersum during Autumn...I found lots of threads all abt this but unfortunately there is no final outcome... My snail has this too in this period that's why im searching for any info i can find abt it. For what i've read in those threads, everybody say that they are like this after mating, but this is not the case for me as she's not laying any egg; some say it can be a problem caused by the chemicals in the food or in the environment; some say it can be abt mites and some other that is related to the winter. I know for sure that if the body is swollen too, then its a problem, instead when it's only the mantle, for some users it became normal just by waiting. Im really not understanding why mine is like this, but i notice that biggest part of threads abt this topic were written in october/november, and are all abt Cornu aspersum... Hope it was useful, as I will have news I will update! EDIT: forgot to say that she has this puffy mantle only when she sleeps.. And i have seen others aspersum sleeping like this in this period. Hope we can find a solution!

Ok thank you my friend! I have to admit I'm worrying a little too much, in fact she's behaving normally and apart from that everything looks normal.. This snail is particularly important to me... I'll try to worry less!

I hope it isn't a mantle collapse Mantle collapse is pretty unlikely if there are no other symptoms or issues. Puffy mantle can sometimes be a sign of recent mating, has the snail had any contact with other snails in the last couple of weeks? What substrate are you using and how often do you clean the tank?

How is your snail doing? Mine has still a very puffy mantle, for more than one month now.. And im 99% sure no mating occurred.. PS: Im using mostly coconut, and some part in peat because she always liked peat and even seldom eat some of that; i change the soil every six month or so (as there's a little "clover meadow" inside too) but I clean the other parts without substrate, and the swimming pools area every day and remove most of poop every day..

Some species are capable of changing their mantle's permeability to water during cold weather; this is believed to help keep them warm around the time they're supposed to hibernate. If the snail wakes up and behaves normally, then it should just be doing that.. Unusual behavior would be not eating as much, being unable to keep its shell along with it (The shell loosely hangs off to the side, it can't use it's muscles to hold the shell snugly against the body as it usually would.) things like that. My cornu aspersum have been having puffy mantles as well, as long as they behave normally they should be healthy.

She's fine thanks! and behave normally, sometimes sleeps for 2/3 days consecutives, and generally sleeps much more compared to the warmer months, but looks healthy in all her behaviours! How are yours?
