I just baked my dirt because of mites and I was trying to kill them, but then I found a small snail. Can someone tell me if I just killed all the babies or if this snail just hitched a ride on the moss. I’m crying because I don’t want to think about the snails I just accidentally killed. I had no idea. He is pretty small but his shell is almost opaque and it has multiple spirals. I don’t know how to attach a picture but I would if I knew how.

keep in mind i got this snail around the beginning of this month, so could it just have been a baby snail riding in on moss. that’s what i’m hoping,

Just get him a little wet. And if he peeps his head out he’s a live. I’m not sure how big he is, but you might be able to see if his breathing hole is opening and closing or not.

hey! the baby snail i found is alive, but his shell is opaque and has multiple spirals. doesn’t that mean he isn’t newborn? i have a feeling he was hiding in the moss my dad picked up, because i saw no signs of my snail being pregnant and saw no other babies.

Sounds cute! Could you post pictures of him? Might be able to tell what he is.

Hard to tell for sure without a picture, but your description sounds like its a fully grown snail. There are quite a few tiny snails and they hitch rides on moss frequently. I have seen them before when I used to collect moss for terrarium and in plant groups who found them in their potted plants. The number of whorls is a good indicator if how old they are as you mention. If its only got 1 or two full whorls, its a juvenile, but if you are counting 5 or 6+ whorls it's a adult. I forgot all the names of the tiny species but a good example of fully grown snails that are still super tiny is Helicodiscus, about 4 to 5 mm when fully grown. I believe yours may be a different but also common "micro-snail" but I'm forgetting it's name right now...

To me that looks like a glass snail (Oxychilus draparnaudi). He is not a baby, but he doesn’t look full grown either.

ok, it's not one of the "micro-snails" but still something that won't grow too big. I agree, it looks to be half grown, but also because of this hard to ID down to species with any certainty. It could be an juvenile Oxychilus, juv Patera, juv Triodopsis, maybe even a jug Mesodon.
It will grow bigger, but not much, about triple in size at most.

thank you so much for the help! i keep getting anxious because he is so small that i can’t find him in his enclosure and i panic but i know he can’t get out. the enclosure i have my full grown snail in is large and i would never be able to find him ahha. is it safe to move him in to the larger tank with another as he’s not a baby? the only issue about that would be that the lid for the tank is a grid with like wire, and the holes are big enough that he could probably get through. i could always cover it with like a towel though.

Take care with deciding whether or not to house it with another snail, if it is a glass snail some of these are omnivorous and are known to eat other snails/slugs.

oh wow! thanks! does he need a different diet? i will probably not keep him in my other snails tank, then. i’ll just move him to a bigger one today.

As long as you feed it a normal diet of both vegetables and protein (along with calcium of course) it should be fine! I'm pretty sure they don't require any drastic diet changes.
