I've joined this forum mostly because I wanted to ask a question. I have always had a thing for snails since a child. I remember when I used to walk the dog with my dad and sometimes also my mom, up a path and under the bridge to wasteland where the dog could run. On the wall of the bridge were these beautiful shells that I now understand to be grove snails and common snails, and my parents let me bring them home. Only issue is, they hadn't thought about how the snails would eat the garden plants so I am responsible for a plague of adorable slime babies in our neighbourhood that still endures after two decades. I used to enjoy painting numbers on their shells, giving weird names and seeing where they ended up. I have what used to be called Asperger's (now called autistic spectrum) and I really enjoyed studying the natural world in depth as a young kid.
When I was in secondary school, I had two African land snails for ten years and I enjoyed watching them gracefully glide around the tank. After I lost them both, I took a long break from snail keeping until I was in my thirties. I am a busy full time worker and part-time student who doesn't have time for a pet that requires lots of affection so I decided to keep some native snails this time, along with a couple of worms, some woodlice and some springtails who act as clean up crew. I really enjoy being able to care for them and I find their graceful trips around the tank relaxing to watch. They may be slow creatures but they are a rowdy bunch who can be heard if I get up in the night - I love the sound of them chomping on their food and/or calicakes (really posh calcium blocks with multiple ingredients).
I find snails really cute and pretty, although some of the people I know don't agree and wonder what sort of crazy woman would want to keep pet snails.
