He has small curls at the end of his antenna's They haven't always been there. He's an apple snail, about the size of a silver dollar. There's nothing else in the tank that would nip or harm him. I fear this may be a sign of illness, or something worse. Please help. Any questions, any advise appreciated.

Apple snails and mystery snails often curl their antennas behind their eye sockets while sleeping, but just to be safe, what are your water perimeters? What is the tank size? Any inhabitants besides the apple snail?

His curls are at the very tips of his long antennas. I have a 10 gal. tank but had to take him out of it. After he reached the size he is now: about half a dollar size. he kept falling all the way from the top. He's got too heavy. It began to strike terror in my heart every time I heard him hit bottom. I saw some small chunks on his shell & one crack, not all the way through to the flesh. I super glued it up, has been holding real well. Anyway, I put him in a much shorter bowl, he doesn't fall anymore. I don't check water perimeters, I just take about half the water out a couple of times a week and add the same amount of clean water I took out. There was a couple of guppies, & 2 other apple snails about the same size as Orca. Sometimes I wish I'd never got into this, too much stress about their health.

Does the smaller tank have a filter? Is it cycled? I wouldn’t worry about him jumping, it’s a natural part of their behavior (my mystery snails jump off the walls of their tank all the time just for fun and they are very healthy). I would keep the bigger tank and just get sand instead of gravel, take out any hard objects he could crack his shell on and add some live plants (anubias nana is great and doesn’t require any care). Also provide him with a good diet (boiled carrots, leafy greens, bloodworms, etc) and make sure he’s got plenty of calcium. If you put him in the 10 gal, and it’s cycled, then weekly 40% water-changes should suffice.

Thank you, the smaller bowl he's in now does have a bubbler and a heater, but not a filter. I also have two Otocinculus' in with him. They all seem quite happy, for now anyhow. It's been quite awhile, so I feel pretty safe with it. I feed bloodworms, & make a concoction of ground up to dust algae tabs, plus cal. plus some baby food that has at least one green veg. Kinda hard to find something that isn't too sweet. Personally, I think they are over sweetening most of the baby foods, it's so un necessary, everything is over sweet, or over salted even for me. They like these home made tablets. I finally found some algae tabs that doesn't contain some kind of copper. I don't use the gel though. I'm not convinced they might not be a little harmful for the snails. I felt I lost a few snails because of it, when I quite using it there were no more unexplained deaths. ttyl, m

I think both the ottos and the mystery snail would appreciate the 10 gal. Ottos are pretty sensitive to uncycled tanks and do better in mature ecosystems. They also really do appreciate live plants. You could keep them in the bowl if you want, but I would recommend a filter and a few live plants.

I got some live plants for them. Can't find a filter that will fit this round mouthed jar, so I think I'll buy another 1-1/2 gal. aquarium. Thanks so much for your help, m
