Hi guys, two of my snails have mated a couple of times in the last week, and I noticed that there is a white little "spike" half out of her "neck" (lets call it neck, anyway it is near the genitals, bit rear)... I will post a pic as soon as she will wake up! i want to ask: may it be the other snail's dart still there, since they mated yesterday night too? or may it be her dart, remaining half out half in? Most importantly....is it dangerous to let her like this? shall I try to remove it very gently? or try to clean her up? thanks for the help

I would leave it. It's not really a problem and the darts are designed to stick around for a while. It will naturally fall out within a few days, and I fear that trying to remove it yourself may cause more damage to the snail if it starts retracting.

UPDATE: here is the pic, yesterday when the snail was awake it was not so obvious to be seen, now she's sleeping, but looks like she is removing it by herself (i hope). another (maybe dumb) question: do you think a snail can reach adulthood in just five months? she formed her shell lip already but is too young in my opinion... I knew already I fed them too much at the beginning (as all the vets I have met, agreed that the collar problem they have should be caused by abnormal growth and too much nutrients)

Was she born in captivity? If you caught her wild she may have already been a few months old.

I found her on some cut plants that were abt to be collected by the garbage-man! so yes in the wild .. but I think she was young due to the extremly small size she had, around 3/4 mm of shell! but in fact is also possible she was older than I thought! Also, she looks adult now as she formed the lip and reached sexual maturity, but she is considerably smaller, compared to the other three snails I got (that in fact grew very big for average aspersum)..

Aw, that’s tiny! Looking at the earlier pictures of her, she grew her pattern later on, right? That may mean she was already a month or two old, but was underdeveloped because of her diet. When I caught Blue Hawaii and Heavy Weather, they both looked like how Xiaodu did. (I hope I spelled that right.) Mine had patternless shells, like baby snails are, then I gave them lots of healthy food and it grew pattern. They were actually three months old, but they were teeny tiny.

Yes right spelling! It's very possible that Xiaodu was the same then.. would make sense abt her growth. Yes she now developed a quiet common pattern, and almost lost completely those nice dots she had when young, she now has a very beautiful shell with a reddish side and a common brown color with black stripes on the other. I will post some pic of all of them soon, but at the moment I dont want to disturb them, as outside is freezing and we had some out-of-season snow these days, so it's a perfect weather for a snail to sleep and recover! I also see you named your Cornu hatchlings, hope they'll grow strong and beautiful!
