Bob has now become playful aggressive and fussy. He allows several pettings on his forehead cheeks and further up on the dome which is developing and typical of adult giants. Then suddenly he gets aggressive and takes a bite of my finger making me say ouch. He definitely has teeth. For food held in my fingers above the water level he moves his snout right out of the water jumps up and grabs it. After feeding on chicken recently for the first time he refused vegetable and fruit and spat out his former favourite tomatoes in a kind of rebuke. Also now very fussy when he has had his first round when hungry. Then he refuses to eat droppings on the surface of the water level and will only grab the food if held in my fingers!!! My fingers are his friend and favourite object and he believes that they hold the best food, other droppings are ignored with disdain and dissapointment quite evident. Fingers outside the tank rubbing on the glass make him very excited and he joins his snout at the point they are and does a merry dance with head down and pectorals flapping wildly which is quite funny and endearing. Patting him on the head :

Now Bob wants chicken daily. he eats up a whole minced nugget of chicken in no time refusing all other food. I have a stock in the fridge for a week. Then ill try and wean him back to veg and fruit and drie prawn. At this rate he is bound to outgrow the tank before long. All visitors love him and now he is also on facebook and my blog with a following. Ive doused his tank with inky blue itchguard as he twitches from time to time. hope it does not get serious. Judging from his chicken feeding it is not so yet. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL FISH NOW ALMOST 9 INCHES ALBINO RED EYED BEAUTY, INTELLIGENT RESPONSIVE LOVING AND ALWAYS HUNGRY

BOB IN HIS NEW TANK how to check monitor sizeBOB PEERING AT ME FROM INSIDE - WHAT AN INTELLIGENT AND RESPONSIVE FISH He looks beautiful! The 44 gallon is definitely much better. He will still probability need a bigger tank eventually, but 44 gallons is a good step up for now. 44 gallons is much better then the 20 gallon. I’m glad he is doing better, and I hope he continues this way. (: I would encourage getting him into a 75 gallon by 12 inches. By 18 inches he’ll probably need a 120 or so. But for now a 44 gallon will be okay. (: Good luck!

Thanks for the complement, ill convey it to him. He continues to get more and more spoilt and fussy but always ready with his dance when i touch the tank glass - he doesnt dance or respond to anyone else!! and my finger first without food is his favourite distraction - immediately he comes up as if to bite it but then just a wet kiss or two while i stroke his head which is developing the typical hump of giant gorami adults. He now totally ignores dropped food which mess up his tank and settle at the bottom. He insists i feed him with my fingers holding the morsals. His aim is not good and he gets my finger before the morsal and when he gets the morsal rudely he holds it and swings away trying to breat it by shaking his head and then swolling it. Some times despite his great appetite he goes hungry when i cannot pamper him. A fish with real attitude. He gets ready and excited as soon as i sit in the chair before rthe tank - he can see me just as well as i can see him. WHAT A FISH.

God he has become real fussy - feed me or let the tank litter with food droppings i wont touch and before long the droppings develop deadly white fungus. If i give in as i have been doing till now, it means sitting before the tank and holding morsels of food between two fingers till His Majesty decides to come over and try to pick the food from my fingers, missing his aim and getting my finger instead more often than not but if in frustration i let go the morsal he ignores it and it adds to the litter. He doesnt care that my fingers after a while begin to cramp - no fingers to hand feed no eat!! A spoilt brat of a fish. I just cant spend an hour each day hand feeding him - the only answer is to let him starve and get real hungry and begin eating athe droppings without the 'desirable fingers'. If after all this frustration i put my finger on the glass of the tank he comes quickly and does a mad dance which i have pictured in one of my posts. - any sugestions what to do to get him to eat without fingers?

Dear Littlegoldsnail
for your information my 44 gallon tank is about 3 feet width by one foot and 3 inches depth by one and half feet height.. I dont know what you mean by ''I would encourage getting him into a 75 gallon by 12 inches. By 18 inches he’ll probably need a 120 or so.''

Thanks for caring to explain.I really dont know what i will do then, and knowing how fussy and compelling he is I might have to do his bidding spending a fortune after having a fight with my usually tolerant wife finding space in my house for the 'FISHY' GUEST who will then have become like a camel in the arabs tent. LOL
But jokes apart bob is turning into an unexpected phenomenon. Apart from possessing me there are some strange facts, never expected in a fish that i would like to share with the world. First he wants no company but my fingers and i know he can see the whole of me through the glass and recognises me because when others come to peer at him he moves away and even turns his head away towards the back glass of the aquarium. He also knows almost like a human, to show anger and dissapointment when the food offerings are not to his liking. Then he sails past the offering fingers as if they dont exist and sulks in a corner not looking at the fingers but turning his head away. Its not as if the fingers only represent food. This i know because what excites him most is my index finger inserted several inches into the tank. Then he makes for it like a torpedo and we begin a game. Before he can reach the finger with clear intention to bite hard in play i pat his forhead then his cheeks then along is body and give him a slight push. He is ready to play and quickly returns to get my finger but i repeat the quick patting and pushing but he is not afraid one little bit and returns to get my finger which if he did would be real nasty and hurtful. I continue what can only be a game for him teasing him by making him miss the finger and instead i get to quickly touch him with a push wherever i want. This kind of makes him enraged in a friendly way and he looks surprised he didnt get my finger but quickly returns in fish fury to try once again. A bond has clearly appeared between this fish and this man which is unique and unexplainable. Its not as if he is lonely for company of his kind - the companion i had earlier put in for him - another juvenile Giant Gorami he hated and almost killed till i fished her out and returned her to the shop bruised and scarred. By himself he appears quite content in what can only be described as deep thought or meditation. This is only broken when he sees me sit in the chair and introduce food or just my finger when he gives up his stationary stance and becomes active. so too when i touch the glass even when it is dark at night when he comes over with mouth wide open and does a vigourous devils dance. All this my friends is not my imagination but a unique phenomenon in a fish which i thought was only possible with the lovable dolfins and Killer whales. I would welcome any comments from our friends of the fish world so i can understand what is happening with this fish BOB - i have kept fish all my life but never encountered this kind of behaviour and what i can only describe as affection of a fishy sort.

I know what you mean. Just like cats and dogs, some fish keep to themselves, but some are very affectionate. It just goes to show that every animal has a different personality. I had a little Ranchu goldfish that was so scared of me for the longest time, but after it’s friend (a little Oranda), passed away, it was lonely and became much more friendly with me. After a while, the little thing grew to love me and would get really excited and wiggle up the the front glass whenever she saw me. It was the cutest thing. I no longer have her, but right now I have a little blue Oranda that is very affectionate and kisses my fingers and will let me stoke it and hold it. The little black moor I got is much more mellow in personality and just sits back and watches until I present food.

Bob now is learning to eat from droppings rather than always insist on my feeding him with two fingers. Basically that happens when he enjoys what is being dropped. Otherwise the two fingers have to hold the food to convince him that it is worth his while. He is moody and fussy but the fingers work in attracting him. I brought home my favourite dish Tandoori Chicken Tikka which is chicken roasted in a clay oven and marianated in curd with some mild tomato spicing, presented as golf ball sixzed nuggets. Absolutely delicious and the only chicken which Bob loves, being my kindred soul.LOL. Well you cannot give him the mild spicing , so i remove the skin wash the chicken of all tomato dressing till only the white meat shows. Then i cut the nugget remaining into small pieces about 1 or 2 cms and first offer him one piece between two fingers and once he knows what it is start quickly dropping the pieces which he hold chews and swollows in no time. In this manner i fed him a whole nugget of Tandoori chicken. No fuss when it is chicken and i kept noticing as his belly bulged till i thought he had had enough. Next to help him digest it i offered him the food which he again accepts readily without fuss and no need for my two fingers which has bitten several times when her got his aim wrong and when i in frustration dropped the morsal so he could help himself he just ignored the descending tomato, cabbage apple or whatever else!! that favourite food is spinich. He catches hold of one end of the leaf shakes his head violently till part is firmly in his mouth and then just swollows it all. He loves the taste and ease with which spinich goes sown and so polishes off all droppings of spinich from the surface one by one. Luckily the leaves or bits of the leaf do not sink or he might ignore it . He hates sinking food - either floating on the surface or between my fingers except when he is very hungry right at the beginning when he gulps every dropping down for five minutes. After that only spinich and chicken accepted as droppings all else ignored without fingers. I caught some pics of his with the spinich. Here they are:

Littlegoldensnail
Im sorry we had an argument the other say about ethics of getting rid of too many littlegolden snails - whatever we are all entilted to our opinions so let it rest.
Further i wish to respond to your reply of Nov. 18 above. Looks like you too are experiencing rare responses from the fish world like your little blue Oranda!! What is it a species of goldfish like your black Moor? I never imagined that goldfish could have such capabilities as i have always thought of them as pretty but with not much else. so looks like you have proved me wrong. i tried hard earlier to make my Paradise fish interact but no - they were only interested in samurai wars like the betta fighting to the end. Tell me more about the Oranda and send me a pic if you like. Id like to acquire one. I hope one day you can have a Giant gorami like Bob - just amazing how one can establish a friendship with a fish. Buy a real jubenile of say 3 inches and experience the rest as time passes. good luck.

Buy a real jubenile of say 3 inches and experience the rest as time passes. good luck. This is my blue Oranda Goldfish. His name is Mosiah. Most people are surprised by this, but goldfish are actually extremely intelligent. Science has proven that a goldfish can remember a specific event that happened 5 months ago. My goldfish recognize me, and when they see me, they swim up to the front glass and nibble on my fingers. My little Black Moor (Black butterfly telescope goldfish) is actually blind, but she can feel me approach the tank. When I feed her, I have to put her in a net so she can find the food (otherwise Mosiah will steel it). She knows the feel of the net and gets really happy whenever I put her in. She will immediately swim to the bottom of the net and look for the sinking food. These two little goldfish are best buddies, and stick to each other like glue. It’s so cute.

sad but amazing how gold fish behave like intelligent fish - sad because of being blind but with your love and care its a fortunate fish nevertheless. incidentally my mystery baby snails are multiplying by the day to my unending joy - now, as i posted elsewhere the second tank has about a hundred tiny snails foraging around. there is silence in the largest tank with the 3 adults there growing larger than i imagined for mystery snails but no mating -probably all males. im leaving the bachelors alone since i have had more success with breeding than i can manage. your gold fish are cute but i dont see any 'blue' colour anywhere. probably the black is called blue!!

Actually, Mosiah (the first one), is sky blue with a brown wen (head). The bottom one is the black butterfly telescope goldfish. Sadly, however, my goldfish were struggling with parasites for quite some time. I tried several treatments including salt dips and praziquantel, but to no avail. A couple weeks ago it got very severe and the black one was in a lot of pain. I ended up euthanizing her and a few days later, the Oranda as well. It was very depressing and I was having a really rough time last week. Staring at the empty tank was really difficult. So, last week, I picked up some freshwater shrimp! They are super cute. I got more plants for the tank as well. And then... while I was at the store I saw a little baby black Ranchu. I fell in love with it, but I told myself I wasn’t going to get more goldfish. Two days I still couldn’t stop thinking about him, so I called the store to see if they still had him, and they did, so the put him on hold for me and I picked him up that evening. And here is the Ranchu! I also decided to move my little rabbit snail to the tank.

In pet shops earth worms are not available here but i got a jar of dried shrimp which i supplement with the vegies. to get earth worms one has to wait for the rains when the emerge over ground but im not into collecting and chopping them - thus far for Bob but cant go that far. Thanks for the tip anyways.

Well i got some dried blood worms which he gulps down fast. Unfortunately today while having his tank cleaned we had difficulty returning him to the tank from a bucket of water. The net is no longer big enough to hold him and he becomes very traumatised shaking furiously almost a kilo of weight difficult to manage. So we tried raising the bucket to the level of the aquarium and tried to propel him into the tank, easier than wounding him compressed in a net - but he just jumped out and landed on the floor!!! I was so sad but we managed to get him back into the tank. RESULT - big bruises on one side where he fell and torn fins. He looks fine but dont know if there is internal damage or fractures yet. He respomded to my finger on the glass with the usual mad dance which is a good sign but lets see what happens tomorrow - I dont want to lose my dear Bob after an year of caring and establishing a rare friendship - I added 6 table spoons of salt for healing the bruises and some liquid mediciner called gENERAL AID TO PREVENT INFECTION ON THE BRUISES AND HELP WITH RECOVERY. pRAY THAT ALL ENDS WELL AFTER THIS MISHAP. HAVE TO FIND A LARGER NET TO EFFECT ANY TRANSFERS IN THE FUTURE. Some pics of Bob after he jumped out and landed on the floor:

May I ask why he was removed from the tank in the first place? There is no reason to remove fish for cleaning. Simply syphon the poop and half the water out with a syphon hose, then refill the tank with dechlorinated water that is the same temperature as the tank water. Here are some demonstrations. I would not recommend removing fish from a tank while cleaning, it is very stressful for them. m.youtube.com/watch?v=LYv5n0a85OYm.youtube.com/watch?v=CjNTUbUnwfYFor treating the injury, keep a mild dose of salt in the tank (not very strong), and keep the tank very clean so it doesn’t get infected. I would recommend changing 10-20% of the water every other day. I hope he does okay!

Littlegoldsnail thanks for your adviceand the videos about cleaning the tanks. very useful. In the past i was changing 50% of the water every week or so. But this time i wanted a real clean tank so the mishap. Bob revovered quickly - next day 20% of his appetite back and today almost full appetite. The big bruise near the top of the head has already healed over 50% and the colour is not red but light pink. He has survived the fall - some 5 feet - amazing. Luckily the floor was flat marble with no objects or he would have torn into half. Seems fine now but a bit worried about his enthusiasm to get to my fingers before they touch water level - he has begun to jumpseveral inches above water level with mouth wide open to grab the food from my fingers!!! He therefore can jump right out of the tank in play or whatever. I put the lid firmly in place most times.

Bobs growing by the day. He eats boiled cauliflower almost a handful mainly the stems, an inch or so of cucumber, a small squash, quarter tomato, 6 large leaves of spinich, and a generous helping of dried blood worms. But most of all he wants to take a bite at my serving fingers, but now he gulps down my dropped on surface offerings. Got to be careful that mouth has enlarged and if i delay in dropping food he jumps right out of the water 4 inches to grab it from my fingers. real scary, so i try to drop quickly before he can JUMP.
