I found a snail on the sidewalk while I was taking a walk with my 10 year old daughter last week of May. She (of course) wanted to have it as a pet, so we brought it home. I did as much research as possible and made him a home and been giving him whatever scraps I use when cooking. Mid june, it started to get very hot in the room I have him in. I started noticing he was burying himself alot. Before he would sleep under cabbage leaves or the ceiling of his home. At first I thought he was lost because I had left a small opening so that carbon dioxide can be released. But when I started researching on why they do this, I started leaving him alone. (I would dig him up to check if he was ok and put him under running water and he'd come out)At first,he would come out at night take his walk, eat and bury himself again. It's been about a week now and he hasn't come out. I'm not sure if he's hibernating, aestivating or worse dead! I keep reading around that they do this during the summer season to protect themselves from excessive heat, humidity and lack of water. I still give him fresh food and water just in case he comes out. Oh, I forgot to mention that I figured that he might be aestivating because his shell opening has this white coating that looks like he's sealed in. I guess what I want to know is, is he ok? Is this a normal thing that snails do in the summer and how long? Is he hungry/thirsty when like that? What are signs of something not going right like what do I look out for? Do they still grow while like this? I've had him for over a month and haven't seen any changes in size. I'm full of questions! I know nothing when it comes to snails. Only what I've read online. Google photos tells me he's a
Grove snail. I know nothing at all. Can someone please give me some advice and tips on how to properly. are for snails? Thanks so much!
