I went to the lake and found this snail. It was right by the shore and was not holding on to anything but was also getting rolled around by the waves. I brought it home and put it in my aquarium. It looks like it's shell might be cracked and one of its antenna is gone. This would explain its odd behaviour. I think it was probably attacked by a rainbow trout fry because there are lots of them where I found the snail. It is looking around but is having a hard time sticking to the substrate. Is there anything I could do to help it? I am also wondering what it is. It has a long spiral shell that is brown and coils to the left instead of the right. It has long antennas that it seems to be able to move around. It's body is almost black. It also sticks this thing out and than retracts it again (seen in picture 3). Hi lucas, it might be helpful to know the country/state where "the lake" is......... . Sorry, I can't see too much on your pictures. For me (at least) it is nearly impossible to tell family, Genus or species. What ist the hight of the shell? Is there an operculum to "close the door"? Is the shell "left-handed" or "right-handed"? If it is left-handed, it should be family Physidae. Kind regards: wolf

The lake is in B.C. Canada. I looked for physidae and it looks like my snail is either the moss bladder snail (Aplexa hypnorum) or the lance aplexa (Aplexa elongata). The second one is more likely. Sadly the snail died last night though.

Hi lucas, thanks for the infos. So the shell is sinistral ("left-handed"), obviously. The actual name for Aplexa elongata is Sibirenauta elongata (Say, 1821), as far as I know. Perhaps you can take some pictures of the empty shell.......... . Kind regards: wolf

Thank you for the other scientific name. Here is a picture of the empty shell ibb.co/Bw3V2gq . I am hoping to find some more of these snails but I read that they are very difficult to keep. I think it was also brought into the lake by a bird because they only normally live in temporary bodies of water and this is the only habitat they can breed in.

Hi lucas, thanks a lot for the picture. It surely is family Physidae, no doubt. You know the species better than me, of course. Have a nice time: wolf
