The last couple of days I've been doing some research in preparation of buying two young Giant African Land snails in the next couple of months. I've come across two terms I haven't been able to fully understand. They are F1 and G2 (or G3, etc.). I've grasped that they have something to do with the genetics of the snail but I can't figure out what they mean. I want to try and get healthy snails and so I was wondering if someone could explain to me the meaning of these two terms so I can be more aware on the subject Thanks in advance.

I believe it has to do with how far away they are in generations from their wild parents. Hopefully an expert will explain better.

Hi lla, I think you're quite right: F1 is the first generation after the wild parents. The parent generation is "P".
As far as I know, the term "G" is commonly used when mutagenic substances/methods have been used (with "G0" is the mutagenized generation and G1 is the next generation after the mutagenized parents). Mutagenic substances cause mutations (= chemical changes in the genes/DNA of the animal/plant).
Kind regards: wolf

ah right! so if a snail is F1 G3 then it's the first generation derived from wild parents and it is an offspring obtained from a mutagenic technique characterized as G3, which I suppose I'd have to look into. I also suppose it's better to have snails that don't have a G term in their DNA chart?

Hi, "F1 G3" doesn't make much sense in my opinion. A mutagenized generation before the parents were caught in the wild?? Can you contact the people who wrote that? I'm a little bit confused now. I know "G" only in the sense I defined in my first post. Perhaps these people mean something different......... . Regards: wolf

I've gone back to look at the original listing and I think they changed it and added G3 (Group 3) so turns out G was just for which group they came from . Thanks nonetheless for you help!

Hi, thanks a lot. To use the term G1, two, three..... in this sense is very unfortunate and misleading. But so what....... . Thanks again, have a nice time: wolf
