Hello, my name is JJ and of course I love snails. My obsession started about 2.5 years ago. I was a flight attendant-have been for the past 20 years and I broke my spine on a turbulent flight. I had a long road to get my wings back and the first few steps were the hardest. My dear sister who lives in Kansas took me in while I was recovering because I couldn’t do basic things like grocery shop or clean or even drive. I spent most of my recovery hanging out with my little nephew who was just a 2 year old. He was a great little buddy, helping me and going on short, slow walks when I feeling up to it. One day it had just rained and there were garden snails everywhere! We were both so interested in them that we kept some in a terrarium and our adventure began.
I finally was cleared to go back to flying and while on my layovers I found myself snail searching out of sheer habit. Most of my layovers were in south Florida and the Keys and found the zachrysia provisorias as well as the liguus varieties everywhere. I brought a couple home with me (I learned later that I shouldn’t have, but by that point they were having babies and returning all 25-30 wasn’t feasible.
Two years later I have a VERY large collection and am known as the crazy snail lady. I love educating people with all the odd facts and showing people videos of how intelligent they are and how they are actually affectionate and recognize different people.
I have secretly hoped I would find a giant African snail at some point but haven’t had the honor yet. I’m glad to have finally found other people who share my interest in them and can’t wait to pick up some additional knowledge by people who have been snailing longer than I have.
