Hey everyone,
I am a young owner of 6 giant African land snails. I had one called Heidi who passed a few months ago. She had to be put down after getting gut extrusion. Before her 'balloon/bubble' appeared, long before that she had a large/infected mouth, which I believe is a sign that gut extrusion is coming soon- at the time I did not know anything about this and did not even know it was infected. Quite a while after her infected mouth, I went to look at the snails and Heidi had a massive bubble coming out of her neck/mouth (I couldn't quite tell as it was very large). When this happened, I had not a clue what it was, I did lots of research and found out it was probably an oral prolapse. People online requested to put powdered sugar on it- this helped it go down but did not clear it off forever. Obviously this was not a good sign as she would not be able to eat, which would cause her to die of starvation. Online it says to take them to the exotic vet immediately. The day after, she was taken to the vet (after the night she was quarantined out of the other tank from the other snails) and when I got home sadly I had to face the bad news that the vets had said there was nothing they could do and she got put to sleep. R.I.P Heidi.
It has been a few months from her passing and the other day I noticed my albino, Petal, looked like she had the infected mouth (I couldn't quite tell as much as it was a different colour as she is albino-however it still looked wrong). We have been putting powdered sugar on it every day since we saw it, but I really do not want Petal to have to be put down like Heidi did, I was clueless when Heidi got it. I do not want to give up on Petal like I had to do for Heidi. I am in urgent need of tips, help, and information. Is it the same thing as Heidi had? What can I do to stop it from leading to gut extrusion? Please help. Many thanks.
