Hi EveryOne. I'm a complete beginner with snails and slugs but I try to maintain some Spanish Slug. I try to find information via google but of course that your experience are more practical. So all I've done is to collect some of them, put them in plastic containers which has coconut substrate in the bottom to make them feel comfortable. and for feeding, I only give them lettuce till I find a good meal schedule. So I have some questions: 1- How do you mate your slugs? (or snails) 2- Is there any special diet or lettuce is fine for everyday meal? I will appreciate your help.

1- Snails/slugs seem to just mate whenever theyre mature and conditions are right. If you breed them make sure you properly cull the babies (80-90% of offspring will be unhealthy and live less time with more complications so we need to humanely euthanise them to make sure we keep and distribute only the healthiest snails/slugs for breeding in the hobby, otherwise it would be overun with genetically unhealthy and deformed specimens. You can just weigh your babies every 2 weeks until theyre a decent size and crush the lightest ones, as these will be runts) and don't release the eggs/babies as they will have an unfair advantage over wild ones. Just bare in mind slugs can also self fertilize so one can reproduce even if housed alone and it's not advised to keep those clutches as they are likely to be runts. Freeze or crush any eggs you don't want, you should be checking for them weekly while you aerate the substrate for them. 2- Lettuce is very low in nutritional value, as is cucumber. Try feeding them more nutritional things and cut out the lettuce completely. My snails eat mainly carrot peelings, zucchini, sweet potato and peas. They also require a source of protein once a week, the ones i use are gammarus shrimp, which you buy dried and rehydrate in water before feeding to them. www.giantafricanlandsnails.com/feeding-snails.html this guide, though its intended for giant african land snails, should be applicable to slugs. I'm unsure as to whether they need a calcium source though.

Hi! Congrats on slugs! All of what Suspiciousbagel had said is right. If you want to specifically breed two slugs or snails, you can put them in a separate container or a breeder box. Culling is your best option if you do not want to care for a lot of slugs or snails, and you plan on selling some, etc. There is a way around it, but it’s a lot of hassle. You can make a small ‘salad’ every few days that cantinas a few safe snail foods (mostly being veggies.) Them give your snails/slugs from this mix every other day or so. You should change up what’s in it every few days to prevent a picky snail or slug. Here is a specific slug care videos I made if you are interested! youtu.be/DUpAfoMIk2AI hope you have a great day or night!!
