Hello everyone! I hope everyone is doing good!
I have been wanting to make a post about this for a while, because this is so important to talk about. I know that we all know to be cautious about what we learn online, and what we hear from other people online. Although, I have seen LOTS of false information being passed out lately in the snail hobby, and with other animals. I wanted to make this post to help all snail keepers be aware.
There are lots of different snail chats and communities out there, many I have witnessed giving out false information. I would like to state that first for all, no I am not an expert, and neither is anyone else.
- How can I trust what people are telling me?
- The simple answer is research. If someone is giving you advice about your animal, and is telling you information that you aren't sure is true, do research. Research as much as you can and ask several people the same things you have been told. People that are trustworthy can back there knowledge up with research of some sort. That is a major issue in the gastropod hobby, there is no proof for so many things. People claim stuff, but have no proof.
- How can I detect what they are telling me isn't true?
- You should almost always look further into what someone is telling you, even if you trust them. Or better yet ask tons of people, and see what the outcome is. Because there are very few people who see snails at vet offices, and are almost no snails vets, it makes things harder. As, there is no one to ask for help, that is extremely knowledgable, and much more trustworthy. I am hoping, that as years go by, this will change..
- What can I do when I can't find the help I need?
- When you can't find the needed help for your animal, try calling a vet. I can't guarantee anything, but it may help. If you have an issue with a snail, and just can't find ANY help, do as much research possible, and contact someone here. I will happily try and figure out what is going on with your snails, as will others here! Since there is very little known about snail problems, I find the forum to be the most useful site out of any other site I've been on.
That is all I will be taking about. But, always, ALWAYS be careful when asking advice on the Internet for an animal. There have been instances where I listened to someones advice, and it almost resulted in loosing an animal's life. I hope deeply one day we can change the gastropod hobby. I have a passion for these creatures that grows every day, and I want to spend my whole life researching them, to help them and so many others. Stay safe friends, and have an amazing day!
