Hi all. I have a snail who, at first try laying eggs last winter, has struggled with the process. First time he laid eggs last winter, they came out as string-like things. I must have accidentally disturbed him and he was down for about a month while he slowly deposited all the eggs. I posted about it here on this forum, and luckily he pulled through. Now, because I was scared he would go through something similar, I kept him in a tank with no soil for a while and he didn't lay any eggs. But then i integrated him back where there was soil, and, yep he laid eggs. And yes they were stringy again, but he managed to recover after a few days. It seems like this process is difficult for him, and almost fatal.
My questions:
I am wondering, is it worth keeping a snail like this by himself in a tank with no soil, or is it wrong?
Also, if they form eggs but have nowhere to lay them, is that harmful? Will they stay in the snail and harm them?
I just want what is best for my snail, and it seems he cannot lay eggs without him falling ill. Any other advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi protectedtower, Laying eggs is a taxing task for a snail. I'm not sure why they are stringy, maybe they weren't fully formed. There's nothing you can do to stop him laying them though, and taking out soil will only make things worse because it is beneficial for a snail's health to be on soil or any substrate which can culture bacteria. I don't think the snail would just not lay eggs without substrate anyway, its not as if they can keep them in there forever! Do you feed him protein? It would help to feed him some especially after laying eggs for strength. Other than that I'm not sure what else you can really do, sorry.
