Hi anyone who may see this.. I’ve had 2 of my beloved snails pass ( one just a couple hours ago and the other a couple days ago) they both lived in separate terrariums and both helix aspersa‘s. They were both doing totally fine and both pass so sudden. I noticed both looked very bloated before their passing ( I’ve tried to search info about bloating and only seem to find that it’s usually mating related but neither had mated.) Can snails over eat themselves into a death? I am super careful about washing all the veggies to be sure there is not any pesticides/chemicals.. they would both normally eat carrots, zucchini, sometimes tomatoes, witlof and cuttlebone.. one of the snails I’ve had for just under 2 years and the other about 6 months. Is there anything you can do to help with bloating? I tried a warm water rinse and a diluted green tea bath which seemed to help a little bit but the poor guy passed anyway. Any advice is greatly appreciated in case this happens again.. or to maybe understand what caused their passing if there even Is one.. thanks for your time 💜

I am sorry to hear about your loss! What parts of the body were bloated, was it the mantle?
In case the mantle was swollen I can think of the humidity being too high, although this is usually a problem in hot summer months, not so much in November.
If the actual BODY of the snails was swollen one thing that comes to my mind is nematodes... In bio-farming nematodes are used to fight slugs. I have no idea if that might be dangerous to our snails.
Maybe someone else knows more about this.

And a tiny part of the dark part of the mantle (sorry I don’t know the correct term but the part usually under the shell) was showing (guessing because of the unusual swelling) as it didn’t seem like mantle collapse.. and after they pass their breathing hole looks blocked and the mantle looked strangely glazed over. With the second snail He went from bloated body to extremely thin within minutes. I gave him a warm rinse and a tea bath which brought him back to a more normal size but then he passed shortly after. Nematodes.. never heard of those.. would you see those in the soil? I haven’t seen anything like that in either terrarium..
