Not to complain But image signatures are a nightmare, bandwidth heavy, too big too intrusive, take attention away from the messages on the board. And needless. Any chance of keeping signatures to text only? I know its pretty, but it really doesnt help with reading the forum.

Personally I have no problems with image signatures,I guess its up to each member what he/she wants to do with them....

It's linked from photobucket, so it shouldn't effect this sites bandwidth? And it is no bigger than many other peoples sigs!! Just 'cause it's a flipping picture you all think it's bigger when it isn't. I don't like the sigs like Sarah and Gabi and others have because I think they take up too much room also but I haven't said anything about them until now! But whatever I'm not the only one with a pic in my sig, just 'cause mines bigger than that other one. I made it smaller too. And many other forums have pics in their sigs, the people on there can read posts fine I'll take this one off -but- I think the text only sigs also take attention away from the messages. So stop picking on mine I'm putting another one in there anyway

Its not site bandwidth, just means I have to switch to a text browser if I want to load this on phone bandwidth? As it is I can use my phone browswer happily. And its not length, images in signatures are just plain distracting when youre trying to read through a forum thread. They stand out more than the very tiny text size used for a standard text sig. Text sigs just arnt intrustive, a g'ert big image is. Not forgetting personal dislike, irritating overuse of jpeg winds up a text purist They look childish, and irrelevant when not forum specific. Its slapping a picture in, for the sake of having a picture? Animated GIF syndrome of the early 90s. Is there anyway of turning sigs off? As a viewing option?

Yes there is in your profile options, it's with the bit that says about hiding your email, hide avatars etc. If you're saying about pics in sigs, why are the pictures people post in threads not a problem? They would take up much more bandwidth than one in a sig. So how is it different except you want to see the others? They still use up bandwidth. And what about avatars? - I'm not having a go here btw, I don't understand it that's all lol. I like pictures in sigs, I am used to them from other sites. I don't think they take away from the messages anymore than long text does. Maybe I have better concentration? Just because you don't like them doesn't mean everyone else doesn't either so it isn't "irritating" to all. They don't look childish to all either And they aren't there for the sake of being there, they're there because we want them to be there ;D A whole signature is that really, not just a picture. Text doesn't need to be there either. Also, not all text ones are forum specific either. At the end of the day you obviously have a different opinion to me.

Its seems all come down to personal preferences of you, other people prefer to have an image with their signature,so let them have it.....

I find them a little distracting, especially if they are bright or flash. don't really like them myself but its up to poster. I have seen the option to turn off signitures on some forums so it maybe avaliable I get confused sometimes when I think the sig is part of the post at first

It is personal preferance Arno, its also a performance issue, and an image issue, and I wasnt trying to start a tizz. Its about relevancy Sian. Picture in threads are relevant to the thread, Im happy to wait for those to load. Im not happy at having to scroll through dross images which have no relevancy to the forum? I just find it utterly needless. Especially on a forum dedicated to something like this hobby? Tacky? Childish yes, because it doesnt reflect a society, reflects a teen angst board. I have avatars turned off. If I turn off signs I lose some nice relevant information, ie peoples current snails/cultures? Just a pity I have to lose that so you can have a nice picture of a penguin with a sign (entirely relevant to snails of course) telling me to get my own tat from danasoft.com, or a huge great psp mockup Just feels like it detracts from a nice society forum personally. Everyones entitled to an opinion. This is mine. I will turn sigs off if I have to and lose that uselful information, just feels like a terrible shame.

Actually you can turn off signatures only while still seeing all the other snail pictures. Is that problem sorted?

Please, if youre going to make the effort to respond, make the effort to read carefully before doing so, saves alot of effort and misinformation.
"If I turn off signs I lose some nice relevant information, ie peoples current snails/cultures?"
Im not worried about losing the other images because I wont? Its just signatures? really Im not that limited, if I turn off the signatures I lose the information people leave in them about thier cultures, and current snails. Which is why it bothers me so much.

Here is my two penneth worth ..... Personally I hate unnecessary stuff like pictures in the sigs, I do use it but I try to stick to small amounts because I do think it is distracting to the thread of conversations but obviously some people like them so I'm loath to turn them off. I would suggest that for listing your snails, everyone uses the species owned list. And I will add an option so you can include your username in your petsnails website profile. That means you can link directly to your entry from your avatar signature here. So anyone who hates signatures can turn them off without missing anything. Sound like plan?

Yeah can live with that, still think pictures in sigs look damn tacky but that would help.

Sarah I don't change it, it does it automatically. Teen angst? Hahaha. If putting lyrics to a song you like, on a nice picture (because it wont fit in as text) and in your sig is now classed teen angst then the world really has gone insane. Rofl. So is a picture of someones snails in their sig is tacky too then? Or their other animals? Better go and tell that to the new member with a pic of their snails in their sig then If that was bitchy, then maybe clarifying will help. (Not picking on you btw new member just pointing this out lol) And once again, not all text sigs are anything to do with the board. They may not be as obvious as picture ones, but they're still there and nothing to do with snails In my opinion that makes them just as "tacky" as pic ones. I also never said mine was relevant to snails, so that comment was a waste. Signatures don't have to be relevant to whatever the board is about. They are they for you to put what you want. Things relevant to the board are -on- the board. I think having the snails and animals in a long list one under the other like many people on here do is distracting. It takes up just as much space as a picture so you still have to scroll just as much. Will simple full stops/commas/lines not do to seperate things? And that is my opinion. I'll take my pic out, but when someone else puts something in there and no one complains, I'll be putting something back in mine Paul sounds like a great idea. I like the link idea even without the other bit.

Sian, considering most of that response was pointless....
As I said, its opinion, alot of what youve quoted was originally example yet youve reitterated as fact or point.
The fact remains image in sig is needless, and very "animated gif syndrome". Pauls suggestion will semi fix it, seems Im alone in the fact it really does bring down the usability of the forum in general, so I'll leave it there?
But in a months time when the next newbie wants a bigger and prettier and more pointless huge damn great block of distracting colour every other post. And you start to see more hobbiests who are in this interest for more than just the odd 1 or 2 snails because they look cute, not bothering to give the forum a second glance it because it looks like a childrens crayon box. Will just be rather sad.
Maybe its an age thing.

What I think is the strong point of this forum,is that you get people with lots of experience and a large number of snails and beginners with just the 1 or 2 (cute)snails. There should be room for serious matters as well as the lighter stuff. If it would really get out of control,it'll be corrected.

Hey hey hey, to quote you, you are blunt lol. My opinion isn't pointless thanks I was repeating what I had already said because from your replies, it sounded to -me- that you hadn't been taking any notice of what I'd said. Might be my fault, might not lol. Some of it is fact though, there are other non snail sigs and the name under name ones do take up as much space as a pic. So I'm right there lol You don't need Pauls suggestion anyway (It's still a great one Paul don't take it away! lol) as I already said I would take my pic out, which I did. But yes if the newbies take over you might need it But I'm behaving now. lol So you can't blame me when they take over rofl. You're not alone in thinking it mucks around with the useability, I just suppose with me personally I'm used to it. So I don't see it as being -that= bad. Oh and btw, you're not that much older than me lol Can I have a teeny tiny picture?

pfft at least a few days older? Arno agreed, theres really not many places like this around, just wouldnt want to see it getting too cutesee, and yes sigs are a very small start, but it happens. The smaller the better? Anyway, its ok, point has been made, discussed, remedied. Good and good and done. Nice speaking to all with regards to the subject.
