I have 4 Aspersas from my garden in a large box . And i must say , they are extremely active , eating very good , they even eat cuttlefish which they don't have in my garden . They where my first snail species , that was a time that i even don't know that GALS exist . Beside my garden is full with asper's and my neighbors are killing them !! I will keep them , i love them and they are feeling very well . I look always first at my asper's and then to my GALS.

I used to collect snails from my garden when I was small, had a tank for them. I didn't know what they were then but now I know they were helix aspersa and cepaea hortensis / nemoralis. Garden snails are beautiful in their own way, they make lovely pets just the same as GALS, and the best thing is, if they have too many eggs you can just put them in the garden!

well personally all my current snails are native. I am getting gals later, i can't have them at the mo as my big tanks need cleaning. none of my snails are shy ( i have 23 ), they are all healthy, happy and well and once one got out, i found it on my bed after 4 days, it never left the room, then it went back to the tank of its own accord. none of my snails have a problem with being handled, in fact most like to be stroked! ( which no gals i know of like)

me & my girls currently have around 40 garden snails in a tank in our house (i say around as im never actually sure whether i have thrown any on the compost bin in the garden when i do the soil - LOL) my (now) 4yr old rescued them from a fence butting onto a building site with heavy equipment etc there were MANY many more than we saved & we moved & re-homed as many as we could further down the road where there is a small patch of grass & tree's BUT this buts onto a allotment & im not sure if they will use snail killer etc so we brought them home - i have NO garden for them atm we are intending on releasing them into the wild as soon as the ground thaws - might take them to Healy Dell nature reserve & let them out there (am i allowed lol) i wouldnt normally say to keep wild creatures in captivity BUT i guess each person must decide the REASON why they have them & square it with themselves - we saw SO many squashed snails on the way too & from nursery by either foot or the trucks that when my daughter gor upset i felt letting her rescue SOME was a good idea

we all have our own opinion on whether taking a snail from the wild and keeping it is a good idea or not. but everybody has their own idea on everything! we could go on forever with this discussion. lets say that you took a brown garden snail from the wild and put it in a good habitat. the snail (if properly cared for) would have months, even years added to its life. it would have food and water and warmth regulary. but the snail could be unhappy with the change. the possibilities are ENDLESS!

wow alot of replies. I had found my snail in a supermarket. I didn't buy it I found it in spinach. I brought it home since it was in a fridge! And I'm not quite letting it out in the wild though. Where I'm visiting now is Korea and in korea they put chemicals so that no bugs and stuff could eat the trreeess and even in the forest they put the chemicals. So I get too scared that my ELIZA is gonna die. So I keep my brown garden snail that's about 4mm long
