Ive been searching for different snails from around the world for sale, and have had not much luck so far, Ive got some small Barbados Snails, but would like a lot more species from all over the world, not just Africa, just wondering what other species of snail, apart from African one's, people kept, or still keep...And could anyone sum up my chances of finding any snails from Central/South America, Asia, New Zealand etc for sale...Are they kept in europe at all?

Aren't they meant to be 80,000 different snail species?

The 80,000 includes marine snails though.
I should think only an extreme minority of them are kept, I mean GALS only number about 2 dozen.

I didnt think of the aquatic sp..They must make up a big percentage of snails I would have thought, I used to keep the native Giant Ramshorn and greater pondsnail when I was around 5-8, that was around 15 years ago, so I dont know if their still common to find...Ive just noticed I have small aquatic snails, thats appeared out of nowhere, in the water section of my Rainbow Crabs aquaterrarium Their tiny, around 0.5cm...Thats too small for the huge Rainbow Crabs to notice so I think I'll leave them in there, they must of hatched out of the live plants in there... I agree I would think only a tiny minority of land snails are kept at the moment, hopefully that will change though

A quick Wiki search turned up this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AchatinidaeIt seems that even the snails on Petsnails.co.uk is just a minority of the African land snails. I mean what would an Arch. Gaboonensis look like? How would you get hold of a pair? We are only touching the tip of the iceberg... P.S. My 50 th post! I am now a Junior Member! w00t!

I didnt know there was so many species of Achatinidae...Maybe, many wild caught snails described as Fulica and Marginata could be a different species of snail, thats on that list? only a guess though. to identify snails, pictures of each species of African Snail would be a great start, theres so many though...about your 50 th post, its suprising how fast the post count goes up isnt it ;D

I don't think there's a big chance of finding snails from those continents, panda, some of them will be protected, some of them you aren't allowed to import...I would suggest to try shell dealers from around the world if you want live snails.

Even the African exporters don't seem to know the different species as we discovered when we were tiger hunting...
I think the only real chance you have is when someone gets some snails in and they happen to be a rare type. That's what Yuri (from the Russian site with loads of species) did.
I think that is why its worth getting a species when you have the opportunity. There are enough of us to preserve quite a good range of species.

I jumped at the opertunity to get the Barbados snails recently and I'll keep looking for others, and asking around, for different species

I think that you are right about many people who import them not knowing what they have. I would imagine that for the most part they are bringing them in as a food source and don't care what species they have. One of those "need to know" things. As much as we care about species information they don't need that to sell them.
I have even run into a wall trying to find out if I can send snails out of Florida where I live. No one seems to really know. I know I can't receive snails like the GALS but have been unable to find out what else is prohibited. No one seems to know, they just say "Some snails".
Good luck with your collecting!

I have, in the past 2 hours drawn up 3 distribution maps for GALS listed on Petsnails.co.uk and that I could find information about their locations. Presenting: Distribution of Achatina Distribution of Archatchatina Distribution of Lissachatina They've lost some clarity when I converted them to .jpg to put on the Internet but are still okay. As you can see, I have too much time on my hands! ;D ;D

They are links as they are too big to put straight on the page.

I don't know why you can't see them, I uploaded them to the same place as my snail pictures.
Can anyone else see them?

They are distribution maps, I made them for no particular reason other than that I had time on my hands.

I have a lot of time to but I don't use it for useful things like that. I roll out of bed at a stupidly late time in the morning and watch Trisha and then sit on internet all day. Ocassionly I paint big pictures of snails but that is the most exciting part of my day. lol at least I meet interesting people while sat in front of my computer. You have inspired me. I shall do something useful..........later...

Ahh yes, later... I'd have put more onto the maps (if you can see them) but for some snails there isn't any information on distribution. Especially Archachatina Knorrii, Other than on Petsnails nowhere on the Internet is it listed. Even the Almighty Google Search Engine turns up zero matches. Paul, where did you find the picture of its shell? Which is a particularly beautiful shell btw. If I had the information I'd make more maps like this, I like cartography and enjoy studying maps for hours (I had an atlas before I could read). Of the information I did get some, like A.Immaculata, were said to be in the vague "Equatorial Africa" so I did a bit of guesstimation for them. Or said "South Africa" I assume that they don't just stop at the boarders of the country but I didn't have exact information so I just did the whole of the country. Bit of a ramble was that ;D
