I have just read on the pcket of my heat mat, that they shoukd be installed for 48 hours before introducing live stock. Is this actually necissary? mickysnail

Thats to allow the ambient temperature of the tank to settle micky, if you were keeping something like say a snake, temperature is very important. To put one in a cold viv and wait for it to heat would be bad practice.
For snails thats not really needed, as they tollerate changes in temperature (and you'll be slowly warming them which is probably better anyway).

Just out of curiosity, whay is the highest wattage recomened for heatmats for snails?

The amount of wattage of your heatmat would depend on the size of tank you are heating!

The wattage of heat mats is related to the size (area) of the mat. It is usually recommended to cover about 1/3 of the length of a vivarium, thus providing a warm-cool gradient. Best practice is to use a thermostat with any heat source as well as monitoring the temperature with a thermometer.

hmm ive just got a heatmat for my new margies... but i dont have a temperature reader... but the heatmat is 1/3rd of the tank... shud i put some bubblewrap round it and stick it to the side or shud i just leave the tank next to the radiator untill tomoro so i can get a thermometer or sumthing...? thankyooz all in advance =]
