This being a question to discuss for every snail dedicated person sooner or later, I reviewed my page on the above mentioned subject (also inspired by gdslvqkrsall, of course, as it also mentions Indian runner ducks). Possibly some of you have something to say about the subject, corrections to suggest - happy reading! www.weichtiere.at/Mollusks/Schnecken/garten.htmlKind regards and Happy Easter, Robert

Awwww, that's so sad....poor snails, they don't know that some plants belong to people. I used to save snails from my ex-boyfriends' mom's garden. She was quite an avid gardener. And HATED snails. I used to go outside and collect 'em all up and release them in the wooded area a few blocks away. She was always really perplexed by it and asked her son all these questions. "What's Kat doing?" "Um, saving snails." "But WHY!?" "She...uh...likes them." "But WHY?" ...And it would go on and on like that. She still thinks I'm weird. But how can I stand by for snail genocide? And the snails weren't in her garden anymore so she had nothing to complain about. ;D I always wanted a pet duck, but I doubt I could deal with the snail devouring. edit: Oh, I know! A good snail control system would be to have a group of snail lovers come to peoples' houses and collect them all up and move them! Like animal control does with bears and such! LOL

Very nice, positive and important your action! You should tell that person that if snails were all vanished from the world, the life on Earth will turn impossible in 6 months!

Awww, thanks. Yeah, we'd be pretty screwed with no snails. Delicate ecosystems and all that. I just couldn't watch her poison or crush them.... Or sit in the TV room while I knew she was out there doing it. I have to agree that inviting other animals into your garden to eat them is a lot more palatable. (no pun intended) It's just nature, animals eating other animals. It makes me feel less.....squicky. Even though I don't like seeing dead snails, no matter how they died. >_< Haha, I just realized that hedgehog in the picture is probably feelin' pretty good. Look, he found beer AND snails! I bet he can't believe his luck!

Hi there, that movie I took the hedgehog from (I just had to, that scene simply was too cool), was very good. It was by Universum, which is very good Austrian nature magazine, as well as a TV series, partly working together with BBC. About the garden - I don't have one myself. But I cannot understand what good it does to have a garden like drawn with a ruler, only lawn and flower beds. I would much prefer a meadow with flowers and butterflies. And snails. Regards Robert

so they changed Arion lusitanicus to Arion vulgaris...why do names keep getting changed?

There is a magazine article by Falkner, where he states, that there is an endemic slug species in Portugal, that is called Arion lusitanicus. That is, however, not the same species like the one now distributed almost everywhere in Europe. So he gave to the latter the name Arion vulgaris - the common slug.
But as it appears, this name has not been accepted by CLECOM, which is why I put it away from my pages.
Thank you for notifying us!
Regards Robert

Yes - only the question is, what would be the right name and where is the difference between the two species?!
