Well tonight my snails have been given their first meat meal - steamed cod ;D I will see in the morning if they eat any of it and I will let you know. I have given it to the dimidiatas, the tigers and the iredalei. Fingers crossed Val

O.K. Update on my snails first meat meal, the steamed cod. Dimidiatas ate a little, Tigers and Iredalei hadn't touched it. This could of course be because the food is strange to them the first time I offered sweet potato they didn't eat it but they do now. So next time we have cod I shall offer it to them again. I may offer them beef next, I wonder how they would like it medium rare? ;D

How about raw?? I was going to offer mine some raw minced beef - I'm thinking that if they eat meat in the wild it's not gonna be cooked. I was eating a ham sandwich today and offered my big margie a small piece of the ham (no mayo ;D) and he demolished it....then licked his lips lol. Not sure how much salt ham contains though so i wouldn't make a habit of it. I caught my son Tommy feeding them Dairylea cheese today i told him he shouldn't feed them things that aren't natural for them and his argument was 'BUT HE LIKES IT!' What can you say to that hehe. Anjie,x.

Awwww lol. Kids are so cute sometimes. I took BA to show my nan (before he died obviously) and we then went to see one of my sisters and my nephews and the oldest was quite interested in the snail lol which I thought was great ;D I'll try a few of my snailies on some salmon next time I have it. Maybe.. I love my salmon lol It does say on the petsnails site that raw food is higher in nutrients and all that, but Anjie. Don't you know snails have little gas cookers in the wild?! I'll have a look at the tuna tin and see what it says about salt and try some of that if it's safe lol. As for other meat.. I don't think steak with garlic will be good do you? lol

It's well known they'll eat meat from a carcass but I'm not sure it is a huge part of their diet. But, the experiment in cybersnail didn't mention (I don't think) exactly what the vegetarian diet is. Lettuce, cucumber, apple etc contains very little protein. However, some us of, including myself, regularly feed seeds like hemp etc which are stuffed full of protein and carbohydrates. In particular hemp has the most digestable protein on the planet, which the edestrine model was based on.
When you look at it, one handful of hemp a day provides 100% of human protein dietary requirements. What I'm saying is that people who feed cereals are compensating already for no meat, and it's miles cheaper too. I'd like to see the experiment done with a group eating cereals, compared to the two others. I think you'd find more comparable growing rates. That said, there are probably still other things meat is rich in that are of benefit. I just think the experiment kind of shows two extreme groups.
That said, I think I'll give them some meat from time to time as a treat.

WOW - thats a brilliant idea Paul. I wish i was in a situation to take on 20 fulica babies and do the experiment myself but ---- i'm not Maybe someone else can. Anjie,x.

There is a stretch of pathway near my house that is always covered in snails when it rains. I walked along this at the weekend and there must have been about 1000 snails in about the first 300 yards. Obviously with so many snails on a pathway some were squashed What I did notice was that every squashed snail was surrounded by other snails who were eating them so it would seem that meat is a part of there diet but whether they actively seek it out and we have been oblivious to this or they are opportunistic meat eaters I do not know. I may try my margies with a steak dinner and see what they think. Brian ;D

Yes, I was wondering about raw v cooked. Raw would of course be more natural to them, if I fed raw it would be minced steak I would not feed raw poultry in case of salmonella. Sian, if I found they liked it I suppose I would feed meat a couple of times a week, that just feels about right.

I've got some fulica babies. I wouldn't mind doing some feeding experiments as long as I new it would be safe.

Leah, preferably ones that contain no additives. Most processed meats do unfortunately.
Anyway tonight they have got...........cooked peeled prawns ;D I also gave some to my aquatic snails and they have gobbled them up already!! I will let you know tomorrow if the GALS have eaten any!!

Update on the prawns!! Dimidiata didn't touch them neither the ventricosa nor the iredalei but the tiger babies nibbled all round the edges.!!! So that's a breakthrough at least I know they will eat prawn.
