today i got a horrendously expensive 'citrus cuttlefish' which provides calcium, iron and other trace minerals. oh good i thought, a cuttlefish that doesn't smell horrible.
but it has 0.05g of salt (maximum) do you think such a tiny amount could harm them? could there be anything in their wild diet which has salt in?
kind regards
mike

oh come on its like one hundredth of a teaspoon - about 20 grains of salt. surely they must encounter salt in the wild somehow

Personally i cant see how 0.05g of salt will harm anything. sodium is an essential part of many biological processes anyway. Im sure sodium is also present in traces in the soil. I think this is somewhat different to pouring salt on them

Snails taste with ther foot so if they touch it and back away or retract then you know it's too much if they eat it then they like it

you could squeeze fruit juice/beer onto the cuttlefish to make it more tasty? or would it go mouldy?

Mine doesn't go orange no and it doesn't smell of sea things either, but it does have a weird smell to it.
Mine might eat it too fast for it to go orange though lol. I think it does actually go a bit yellowy.. I can't remember now. DOH!

Mike does your cuttlebone sit in water at all? or does it sit on very wet substrate? Wet cuttlefish smells foul especially when warm, could try keeping it up out of the substrate? On a plant pot dish maybe?

the reason it smells of the sea is ebcause its unwashed, so wash it, as i said.

I think it's meant to be dry or it will go "off" quicker and smell like you said.

Hmm that's strange. I get mine from the pet shop as we need it for our budgies too but it never smells bad.
I still always try and keep mine dry anyway.
