I have a dish in my main snail tank, but half the time they just push it off of there and eat it off the substrate!! I have bark chip though, so is easier to push that off for them I suppose.

I use any shallow plastic container (like lids of things) I can find and use those as food bowls, I find putting fruit on the substrate too messy, I am trying to train them to sit round the table ;D ;D

Mike, I'll tell you what I find is ideal, those plastic lids they sell to put on cat & dog food tins once they are opened. They are shallow and quite cheap, do you know the ones I mean?
