Firstly, I bought some powder baby foods a while back and keep forgetting to use them, but before I did I wanted to check about some of the ingredients. The ones I'm not sure of are Onion, rice flour and corn rice. I know leeks and celery were said to be poisonous (I don't know if that's definite?) which is why I wanted to check about the onion. The other two, I thought I'd seen someone talk about them before, but wasn't sure what was said. And secondly, are these the right things? cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7737415521cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7737108879Also, just out of interest, how often do you guys change the cuttlefish in your tanks? It just seems that a lot get through it faster than me, but some don't have as many snails as I do I know all snails eat at different rates and all that, but mine eat a lot of it, I just don't seem to get through it quickly

change it when ever you feel you need to, if it's not mouldy or smelly then it doesn't need changing.

But we are talking about snails here, so...

Really? Ooo I didn't know that. Well you really do learn something new every day lol. It's funny, my mum was a vet nurse and knows a lot about dogs especially, but that's not cropped up before. But then if you don't ask you don't know lol That's what I do Sarah. Is nice to know it's "normal" lol. I just didn't get why I wasn't getting through it that quickly when they do eat a lot of it! Thought I might not be changing it enough or something But it's never been smelly or mouldy, the only time I've had to change it before it was finished was when I had those mite/gnat/bug thingies the other week. So that's good. Thanks ;D Now.. anyone know about the rest? lol

The chicken feed I got was different, but that doesn't matter, the one from the link is only a pound so it's worth trying. As for the cuttlefish question:I change it when they've finished it lol

change it when ever you feel you need to, if it's not mouldy or smelly then it doesn't need changing. Or when it runs out lol, when the snails eat all the soft part. If in doubt about the baby food, I wouldn't use it.

Lol yeah, that's when I've always had to change it. When they've got right down to the hard part of it. I don't want to waste the food I spent 20 mins looking through them all to pick out the ones that didn't have leek or celery in, I just didn't think about onion 'cause nothing has been said about it lol. Someone must know for definite? Not dismissing what you said btw SS, I am cautious. I'd just rather find out for sure instead of not knowing and wasting it. Also, would a small amount of leek do any damage? I forgot I had a puree baby food also, but it says it has leek in it. The puree one doesn't matter as it's only a small jar, but I'd rather not waste the powdered ones.

Rofl. Well I have 2 nephews one of which isn't a year old yet, but I don't know whether he eats this stuff lol. It's only one packet luckily, the other I bought was banana so I know that's safe lol. (I hope so anyway, that had one of the rice things in but I know other people have used baby foods. I thought I'd check anyway) I tried googling for plants poisonous to snails but it didn't come up with anything good

Yep I know where it is, I have it on my faves lol. I can't see onion on it though, but then leek and celery aren't on it either. They're normally classed as veggies aren't they? Even if they come from plants lol.
I searched a load of stuff but didn't get anything good.

I grew some onions last year and the stalks were stripped by Helix apsersa. Although they didn't eat the onions themselves, the stalks are very oniony and they weren't harmed. I think they have a tolerance to it but I'm not sure it is a good idea in food that will disguise it. Given the choice most snails don't eat it. I can't see any problem with rice-flour or corn-rice as long as it is well hydrated.
As for the cuttlefish, some eat more than others and they go through stages of demolishing the stuff and then not being as interested. They have an internal calcium store that is drawn upon to make shell so I suppose with cuttlefish always available they load up when they need to rather than taking whatever comes long. Also, it can turn nasty so I tend to throw it away and bung new in but I use pieces of cuttlefish for smaller snails so that preserves it much longer because you waste less.

So should I not risk the onion then? It doesn't actually say how much onion is in there, but there's also carrot, potato and peas. It just says it's made with 84g of veggies. Don't know if that helps? lol
What about the leek? Do you know if that's definitely poisonous? I've only seen it mentioned on an ebay link that was posted. *Will probably find info on it somewhere else now lol*
By well hydrated do you mean make sure it's well soaked before they eat it? *In thicko mode today lol*
My fulica have always seemed to eat a lot of cuttlefish, but the others like you say have phases of taking or leaving it.

Sian,
I learnt and also was told that baby food that with ONIONS in are bad for all kind of animals, so I would not even think I would like to put my snails through that even it might not harm them just for the safe side. I will look up that website for you that talking about "human food" for all kind of animals including reptiles etc.

I do mean well watered by hydrated.
I would class Leeks as onions so the same caution applies.

Bah ok then. At least they've still got a banana one lol. I'm going to see me sisters tomorrow, so will take the other one with me and see if it can be used. That'll be great thanks felix, it'll be handy to read in case there's anything else on there. I know spring onions are bad for dogs, one of my sisters had a lab that ate some and nearly died. (I know others too but we were talking about onions lol) Thanks Paul, I was going to check about how much water to use too lol now I know. Val, are you and SS sharing minds? Lol. J/k So do we think both those feeds on ebay are ok? I don't trust that Arno's answers He's a shifty one Rofl.

www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1399&articleid=1029Sian, here is one of the sites I know of because of my diabetic cats. May be you can still find that useful with your other animals. As you see some of the veg are okay with the snails, so this site is not really for having pets like snails. I could not find the reptiles site at this time of the night. Will try to find that tomorrow (it's on my desktop favourite, not on my my laptop)
