I soak mine in water for a while, then give it a scrub, then rinse it really well. But I also find that they don't like it as much as the stuff bought in the petshop, so maybe I am doing it wrong. The just nibble a bit, not nearly as enthusiastically as the store bought stuff.

The pet shop stuff is boiled and heavily bleached to make it white.

Yeah, it is boiled and then soaked in bleach for ages. Then they allow it to dry and evaporate so by the time we get it the bleach is not harmful. And that is true, as anyone who has ever used bleach to remove mold knows, a few weeks later the mold is back and using the residue as food. I just don't know how long it will take to become fine.
I stripped and bleached a log after seeing a reptile owner do the same thing, but I rinsed and rinsed it and, baked it and thenleft it about a month before a snail got near it. But it is perfectly fine with them now. But anyhow, that's how they do it. I can't find the article I read a while back but a lot of people sell it named like one I found:
"bleached cuttlefish bones for birds, dog"
I bet the stuff from the beach is full of salt also, I assume slow boling is in order to remove this also.

I read an article once and a guy was collecting sea water for his marine fish tank BUT he bleached it before use!! Bearing in mind that these fish are soo sensitive it shocked me. But he airated it vigorously then let it stand, siphoned off the harmful stuff that settles to the bottom, and then used it in his tanks!! But it worked and his tanks looked amazing.
