Do you put the food inside plates? Or do you leave the food directly on the substrat?

Plastic plates for most tanks. The biggest tank (which needs loads of food) I put it on the substrate.

I have a small oval ice cream tub lid in there all the time for food and cuttlefish and an Atrixo handcream lid for water.
The substrate would get messy to quickly otherwise.

oh dear - i've been scattering food around the tank because i thought that would be more like in the wild. i'd noticed he often leaves a lot of it alone. would it be better to put it n one place then?

Well you could try it but when I feed my margies in one place next time I look in the tank they've bulldozed everything and the food is everywhere, sometimes the tigers do the same but none of my other snails do this.

it's really for tidiness of the tank to use plates (except when said food is bulldozed around the tank) to keep it in one spot and make cleanups easier. Your right erica, snails don't naturally use plates, it's just us tidy humans *smiles*

I use a flat glass dish. I think it may have originally been a fancy candle-holder plate or something. The snails don't seem to mind it at all, and they don't have any trouble finding the food on it either (I suppose that they can smell it).

If I'm just feeding vegetables, I don't use a plate, but if they are having fishfoodmush I put it on a plate, because it smells a bit after a while and I don't want bits of it in the substrate! The plate looks like this, my younger sister likes to keep old make up pots when she's finished them for some reason, so I just clean out the the lids from the pressed powder pots ;D

Hi I just posted some photos on 'Join Cepaea Thread' in the 'Pictures Post' showing the results of the first 'Shaydee's Cepaeas Tips' column that she will be posting regularly on the 'Join Cepaea Thread' She has posted two columns so far both excellent. The pictures relates to this particular post and her tip about feeding the cepaeas with cucumber on sticks. Check it out and try it, it works great and my guys prefer it over their dinner plate. vallery

I use a shallow plant saucer as a food dish for most things, but greens usually just get set on the substrate. As for water, I use caps from gallon water jugs, though I'm trying to think of something slightly bigger. With their fondness of swimming and apparent unquenchable thirst, I have to refill them several times a day. I just don't want it so large or deep that they have trouble getting out.

I give foods that spoil easily in dishes, so they can eat it even when slightly rotting without sullying the substrate. I got a set of palm-sized terracotta cups for snails only. Leaves also function as entertainment so them I give whole spread around.

I started feeding mine on nice white plastic saucers; nicked from my orchids. But now I put the food directly on the substrate. The worms and spring-tails I have in there to clean up get their food that way. The snails don't seem to mind;-)

I have enough spring tails and silver bugs, as they eat the snails' poo. I serve food on plastic plates for the smaller snails, and glass plates (or in bowls depending on the size/type of food) for the larger (to prevent them from tipping it over and messing around with it). Seeds (all my snails love sun flower seeds) are spread around to sprout if they are uneaten.

I recently noticed that the lid I use to feed my crickets (which is the part of the lid from a spice bottle) has holes in it. And there food stays fresher longer.
Before it would dry out on top and go mushy on the bottom of their plate.
So I have been thinking of trying this with small plastic plates and putting some holes in it to see if it works for the snails food as well. Because I have the same problem with the plates of snail food.

Mine seem to like to forage so I scatter it over the substrate and even hide bits under the wood and stuff to keep it interesting for them. They get a water dish and fish flake mush in a saucer though just to keep things a bit tidier.
