I always use tap water as well, I have seen nothing to indicate that it harms them in anyway. Obviously if you are keeping aquatic snails then the tap water should be treated before adding it to the tank.

I never drink municipal tap water, nor would I give it to any pet I had, including a snail. I use either bottled spring water or filtered tap water (you should see my filter when I change it -- yuck!!) for myself and for my aspersa. Better safe than sorry, I figure.

It's not an issue in Scotland as our water is very pure but I know in some parts of England it is not so perhaps it would depend on where you live?

I Use ordinary tap water, but ours comes from a deep well in the village. I think its more of a problem in city's as the water is all recycled over and over again Once read a report that city water can cause infertility because so many women are on the pill and the chemical cannot be completely removed, therefore can prevent pregnancy in people with low fertility levels. I Know i am a minefield of useless information lol

Should think most tap water should be fine - I must admit I do use bottled water for my snails though - our water has quite a strong chemical smell as it comes from the tap and our cats aren't keen on drinking the tap water - use bottled water for their drinking water as well.

I use tapwater but always add tapsafe to my mister and their bowls, seems to work as I've had no complaints from the snails or my hermit crabs.

It's a common misconception that bottled water is better than tap water. if you look at the contents they're both pretty shocking but tap water wins because of stricter controls and standards.
The only thing that bothers me is if Brown manages to get Blair's plans for putting fluoride in the water. That could be very toxic to our snails. Half a tube of toothpaste with it in can kill a child! Sodium fluoride is persistant, almost impossible to filter out, highly toxic and causes cells to explode, rots the enamel on your teeth and causes brain damage. It was studied by the Nazis and found suitable to be put in the water supply to lower brain function and make people from the villages they controlled more docile. The evidence is overwhelming. And before anyone says it's good for teeth, that's calcium fluoride.
Even British Berkefield gravity filters with all the attachments can't get rid of it fully. Having said that, you try and find toothpaste without it. Humans are pretty resilient but it could be a real problem for snails...

In California, bottled water labeled "spring water" legally must come from a real spring and cannot have anything added to it or filtered out of it before being bottled.
Not all bottled water is spring water; you must read the label carefully. Some of it is labeled "filtered water," some is labeled "drinking water," etc. I will not buy anything not labeled "spring water." But I do use my own water filter on my kitchen tap which manages to remove 70% of the sodium fluoride added to it (according to the company). It's not perfect, but it's better than no filtration at all.
ETA: I forgot to mention that of course, not everywhere will have the same labeling laws as California. Check with your local area to find out what laws pertain to bottled water labeling. But my point was that not all bottled waters are necessarily a crapshoot.

Does anyone have any experience of using Exo Terra Aquatize? www.exo-terra.com/en/products/aquatize.phpOur water is quite chlorinated and Aquatize additive would be cheaper than using bottled water for snails, but I'm unsure about the additives (essential oils) which "Stimulates slime coat development in amphibians & fish" Another product is "Tapsafe" (already mentioned), however, this "adds aloe vera as a protective coating for delicate skin and gills of fish and beneficial bioactive bacteria to boost the essential aquarium biological cycles and consume toxic ammonia". Again, is it really safe to use with snails? Ali.

Yes I realise that, I have now modified my water purifying. Still use tapsafe for the hermies, as the aloe vera helps with their molts. I'm now using water conditioner for my snails water, all this claims to do is remove heavy metals from water.

i never use tap water for me or my snails, in my area its awful, its either brown, yellow or white, one time we tested it and it was more chemical than water. I use bottled spring water.

I always use tap water and have never had any problems! I do know someone who collects rain water in a bucket and then uses that for spraying her snails with though....

I always use tap water! Bottled water is the scam of the century! Plus I can't help thinking of the environmental impact, all that extra packaging, fuel to deliver it, etc when it comes fresh to your house anyway! How long were people drinking tap water before bottled water was thought up? and how many were harmed by it?

Leah, I for one can be made sick by the tap water here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I must use a filter or use bottled spring water if I am to keep a healthy digestive tract. My mom also used to become very ill drinking tap water in other cities whenever we traveled.
Tap water varies from community to community. It is not the same everywhere. I envy people who have clean, safe tap water.

I can understand that, but surely if thats the situation then you should use a filter not bottled water? I have not travelled much further than the county I live in so I can only talk for my own area, but HERE, people are getting ripped off.

Yes, I do use a filter on my kitchen tap. It was expensive at first to set up, but it paid for itself after a while from what I saved not having to buy bottled water anymore.
