I had this idea, and thought I would throw it into the air in case anyone is interested. Why don't we have a little snail show? Just a fun one of course, with different catagories so many people have a chance at coming home with a fun prize for their snaily buddy! For example: Prettyest snail Uglyest snail Fastest snail Slowest snail Most beautiful baby Oldest snail Best example of (snail species) Tinyest Snail (full grown) Biggest Snail Most exotic snail And there could be more! ;D By the way, this all sounds specific to land snails, but I feel we should allow aquatic snails to be entered equally should someone feel they can safely bring their pet. I don't think it would be practical to set all that up specificaly for aquatic snails anyway. They are tough little guys, so I think they would do just fine as long as they have water. And to make sure everyone has a chance, we can offer 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. ^_^ It would also be a great opportunity for snail people to meet other people with the same snail obsession, and a chance to share your little pride and joy, or joys even if you bring the gang! It could also be a great opportunity for bringing those babies or eggs you need to find homes for in case someone is interested, but that would depend on if we have a big turn-out. Then again, if we make it known that this event is happening and new faces appear in the show, it might be a great opportunity for making adoptions happen, and maybe even bring in new members! It would be called The PetSnails.co.uk Fun Snail Show...or...well, I certainly wont decide everything about it. Edit: oops! Sorry, I meant the International Gastropod Society Show, or Fun Show, either is good. The way I see it happening is a building somewhere is borrowed for the event, and we get several tables setup. Each member puts in a little money to enter (to help pay for the event) and anyone else coming in that isn't a member pays just a little to get in to see the show and snails as visitors. Hopefully we will break even, but let's not scare anyone off either! Each member gets a space of table for setting up a place for their snail or snails. To keep things organized, I think each snail entry should have a number. So, when they apply, they can write down snail #1, or #30, etc. Then we arrange a set of judges that we think will be very seriously about their decisions on the winners. We will have little ribbons all printed out and ready for the lucky snail keepers. So, what do you say everyone? Im not saying suddenly tomorow have it, I say we get a group of members together who are interested in planning it, and we work on it until we have it all sorted and financed. Then sometime during the summer have it. Just don't forget, it's also meant to be fun! And also...if it has been done, im really sorry. Ive never heard of it.

I don't think slowest, fastest and oldest snail would work as there is no way proving the answers.
Also where are all these prizes coming from, someone has to fund these competitions?

Oldest snail: true, it woulden't work for wild caught snails. But for the captive bred snails, surely the breeder wrote down the hatch date. Slowest/Fastest: we would have a little race, it's a fun show after all. It's not meant to be serious. Funding: Well, that's why we need a group of people together for planning. When I say prizes I mean ribbons by the way. But what would initialy pay for the event is the members paying a fee to enter the show, and also if we have outside visitors, we would ask for a little to see the show. Really, it would be a group effort as well. We will all contribute through the show fee, and someone may offer to have price ribbons made. If we had to, someone crafty like me could simply make some by hand to save money. All and all, it's really meant to just be a fun event for snail keepers to meet, chat, offer babies and eggs for adoption, and come home with ribbons and possibly other goodies depending on what is planned. Edit note: also adding, it would be a great way to get the society known.

you still can't prove the owner is telling the truth about their snails age, and we can't have a race because we live all over the world, we're not goung to fly over from Italy, Portugal, Austria just to have a snail race

I understand everyone won't be able to make the distance, but there are a lot of folks in the UK raising snails, and we can only hope as many people that can come will come. I really hope having members from far away isn't a reason not to have the show at all.

I don't think ugliest snail is a good idea even though most of us live in the UK, we're still far too scattered around for all of us to go to one destination. I also don't think there are enough of us. It's a nice idea but just not feasible

I'll just let it go... Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to give out a bad idea. Sorry, forget I mentioned it. And sorry about the uglyest snail catagory, I saw it in a dog fun show and they saw it as a positive catagory. Im just not very good at defending my ideas, that's all.

Don't worry about it, I don't think anyone is rubbishing your ideas at all. There's no harm in a suggestion. We have thought about the possibility before and it seemed impractical. Perhaps it is one for the future when we have more members. That way, it could be done in an area if there were enough willing participants

I also had a thought as well, perhaps we could also have regional ones when we have more members, that way everyone can join in one that is more reachable. There could also be simple regional meetings as well, just for having snail chat and trading. Like, all the folks in Scotland or in northern England could plan a meeting, and all the folks down in England and Wales could plan a meeting, etc. Im just thinking of the distance from Scotland to England, I think having regional ones would be quite cool.

On a plus note, a show might be impractical, but there's always the photo competition ;D

I think it's a brilliant idea! But thinking about the praticalities it would have to be WAY in the future. It would be costly. Not only for the venue but people would have to travel to get there. Most of the members on this site are in England which means most could travel there if they had the time and money. For those in other countries we could set up a webcam.
Prehaps we could start smaller. I'm thinking about things such as taking part in bigger events. If theres a bug show somewhere, I.G.S could have a display there. Or we could have small displays in our local zoos and wildlife centers. The point is we need to be well known before taking on something as big as a whole show of our own, or there would be no turnout. We need promotion. That can start of with little things like posters and leaflets. Then in the furture we could hold our own shows.

GO FOR IT! And it would be a great chance for people to buy and sell snails! If we all put a bit into it, it would soon pay off with small entrance fee's. I think alot of people would come out of curiosity and for a fun day out with the kids.

We could always have a snail show on the forum, like the photo competion. You could still do things like prettyest/ uglyest snail. For a bit of fun.

A mate of mine is organising a bug show in SW somerset, shes looking for people to go there with stalls and displays, i probally can't make it, but mabye something could be done there? her email is: BugfestSW@aol.com plus it would be an interesting visit generally, mabye we could inspire people enough for snails to wrap their hearts in slime, just as they've done to most people here, lol
