Hi there, I realise they must be all different, but do they usually reach full size in a year or two or more like 5 etc?
If they remain small for years, there is no point me buying a big tank with a couple of tiny snails taking up just a corner of it.
At the moment I'm considering margies, fulica, iredalei, dimidiata etc. I didn't want a huge tank, so will not really have space for full grown Tigers.
Cheers.

most snails reach full size in about 1 - 3 years. But they grow all through their life, just more slowly after a while.

Margies get just as big as tigers lol. This is a margie www.nat-snails.mypetpages.net/index.php?getpage=fullsizeImage&artist_id=3322&image_id=71652Full size can take a few months to a few years depending on the species. Iredalei grow to 5-9cm. 1 of mine is 5cm and its only 3 months old. But a tiger could take years to get full size. I don't actualy know how big dimidiata reach, fulica is about 15cm, mine are all about a year old and 7cm-ish but they were kept in bad conditions some of their life so they may grow faster when looked after properly. Crikey, that margie is almost scary! The sizes I have been using for reference are: 18cm Tiger 15cm Marginata 12cm fulica/ventricosa 10cm iredaie/dimidiata 8cm smithii These are what is given in the snail calculator. I know this is only a rough guide, but its the only guide I have at the moment as a complete newbie to the field.

I need to amend that. I would say iredalei grow to 9cm and dimidiata 11 possibly 12cm.
Those sizes are the average maximum, if you see what I mean. They can grow bigger on occasion.

my biggest iradelei is 7.5cm.
it depends on species i think...my margies took about 6-8 months to reach 14cm. iradelei only take about 3-4 months. my biggest fulica took about 1 year to reach 14cm. my smithii has taken a year to grow to 8cm. but it depends on how much cuttlefish you give them and if they eat it. i used to have these calcium pellets, they were so brilliant. i need some more i think.
kind regards

I was reading that snails are a bit like goldfish in that they tend to grow into the space provided, so if kept crowded they will not grow as large. Anyone else read this?

err.....no your guide to snail sizes is only the shell length you have to remember that when they stretch out fully they can double in length ;D

Not sure thats true, my fulica babies grow much better if kept together in a small tank, not sure why probably somoething obvious like they dont have to expend too much energy to find the food. Although i just moved my dimidiata to a big new tank and one of them has had quite a growth spurt after just a few days!

they will grow, maybe not very fast and very worn and stunted. Put it this way you wouldn't have very pretty snails after a year, lol

Miine are usually ok because i move them up to bgger tanks before anything can go wrong, but ive seen some snails with what looks like scarring on the shell. It doesnt look like a break or anything just a rough area, do you think this could be caused by a period of unhealthy growth?
