I've taken some picture of some of my GALS' shells that have been damged by those fatter mites that live in the soil. I don't know how they do the damage but it can certainly be serious so watch out if you get them. This is a dimidiata with very minimum damage. My dimidiata and fulica seem to be more resistant to the mites than other snails. These are two of my smithii with, I'm sorry to say, pretty typical damage . You can see on the first pic where the newest shell growth hasn't got as much damage as before. This is very close to what Colin had (if you remember) but he rasped off the affected shell growth instead of letting it become too damaged. This is heavy damage on one of my panthera's shell . The yellowing edge of the shell is indicative of it being affected by mites. All of my GALS, and the majority of my natives (which haven't shown any noticeable damage to their shells) are now on capillary matting to try and beat this problem. I hope this helps!

I've got 2 baby margies and their shells are growing like that - no mites in there though. Are you sure its them doing the damage?

Well it started when I first noticed they had mites and just about stopped when I moved them into quarantine, that may be slightly circumstantial but nothing else fits... All my GALS have some kind of damgage like this, how bad is it on your margies?

The pictures of the dimidiata is the same damage apple snails get, if it is mite related then its not just mites that cause it. A split/bad shell growth near the whorl which contines to spread along the whorls edge as the snail grows so you end up with exposed tissue when really bad.

The yellow edge on the shell is actually new shell growth (at least it is with my snails)before it darkens to the real color. The white areas could be the snail rasping its own shell,or other snails rasping it?

New shell appears yellow on my snails too, well the bigger ones. I have a baby margie with damage a bit like that but I have never seen mites on any of the snails, and he's the only one in a tank of 13 to be affected. He simply likes the taste of his own shell But I'm beating it.. slowly Nat

So, it can happen without mites aswell? If my snails fix this soonish now they are all out of tubs with soil in I think I can put it down to the mites. Possably they are allergic or something to them, as the mites dont affect my natives at all. Perhaps these mites are also native to Britain so they have devoloped a resistance to them?

The pantheras shell reminds very much of how my margies used to look before. I can get some pics later if you want, I'm at the wrong computer at the moment. Anyway, they started growing good looking shell later and repaired it. Now I can't even see where the damage was!

I have one ventricosa that ate its shell along the suture, which caused that piece to break off. There are definitely no mites though, on the snail or in the poo. I'm not sure this problem is always mite related. Perhaps it is indirectly caused by mites.

My dimidiata has been nibbling on his shell. Not always in the same place. There isnt really and damage to speak of at the moment. I can't see any mites so I can't think why he does it.
