I seem to have a bad mite problem, when my snails come out at night all they seem to do is rasp away at the inside and outside of their shells, they are really irritated by them and they can't move around properly without stopping and rasping and then they retract really far back and won't come back out for the rest of the night. It has effected my fulica, smithii, iradelei and dimidiata, what can i do to eliminate them, i can't watch this happen another night help! Corrected Latin name for search purposes - paul

I just wanted to say that the mites are not cheap and you get 10000. I'd make sure the problem you have is mites. If so, I'd share the cost and mites with others on here who may need them.

I found bathing the snails and cleaning everything helped a lot although my problem wasn't that bad to be honest. I just got the fear that they were a dangerous type (don't worry, 6 of these on a snail can cause problems, so if you have lots of mites they'll just be the bog standard type).
If your snails are suffering try that as soon as you can. You may find you have to knock the mites off with a jet of water from your spray bottle. Also, you need moving water, like the shower, the mites can swim, and will try to get back onto the snail.

My snails got mites to! Found some of them yesterday. Sooo disgusting! So now it's bathingtime for the snails and they're getting new soil and everything. Moahaha I'm gonna be a mite killer, I'm so mean. ;D

Sarah, you have to get your snails out of that soil!!! Take them out, rise them carefully one by one and then get rid of the soil - all of it and replace it with some damp capillary metting as a 'bottom' for the tank, the mites cannot live on matting. I think it was James who had this problem with mites and he set up a tank as in my thread "An alternative way to keep babies" ( in HABITAT) and the mites just died!! For tonight I would just put them in a bare tank with a handful of moss or something anything to get them away from that irrittion. Try it and let me know how you get on. Leah couldn't get the matting so she used a coir basket liner instead - just as good hth. Val

Well put them in a bare tank for tonight then and get some when you can, at least you can start the process of the mites dying. You gotta keep them out of soil until the mites have gone!!! They thrive in soil.

I have never had a mite problem, but I have heard that it doesn't take very long once there is no soil.

If they were left in the same conditions then I have to say that it really isn't surprising that they are now very ill. I hope very much that it isn't too late for them. Val
