i found the iradelei that was living in the margie tank dead it probably didn't like the really wet compost. I don't understand. When I change the soil it starts off as moist as the other tanks but gradually gets wetter until theres pools of water and it smells horrible - like the gas from the gas taps at school. I'll change it today. Despite the awful substrate I found 5 margie eggs, which i put in a tub, with holes in, with compost, on top of the freeview. i hope theyll hatch. kind regards mike

Damn. I was planning on having an Iredelei and a Margie together. After reading this forum and some websites it seems that Spagham moss is the way to go. Maybe if you used this you would not have pools of smelly water? I was looking at some moss in a garden center today. Water would probably go right through it to the bottom of the tank. You could easily then grab all the moss and tip the water out. Being a plant it should help keep the air fresh & take in water too. If you have a cold room and a tank warmed with a heat mat, you will get condensation form in the tank. Maybe this is what is causing the excess moisture? Check me out............snail expert and I've never owned one.

theres no heat mat so im confused where this water is coming from. it cant just magically appear.

Actually.......thinking about it the other way around, maybe a heat mat would dry out the tank, if it was placed underneath?
Maybe you just need some more ventilation so that moisture in the air has somewhere to go other than the floor of your tank.

it comes from the margies and the peat. its a combination of them eating and the peat degrading and stuff. i have changed to coir now and its perfect, allows burrowing and is easy to keep clean and lasts ages. i also use moss too with babies and soem in adult tanks.

Yeah, I very rarely need to change mine, I just wash the sphagnum. Clean everything else up once a week but the substrate lasts yonks.

I've got Brixton Tigers soooo EVERYDAY!!
I kept them in bare tanks for the first 4-5 days so i could monitor their 'poo' and check for nasties - have had one scare but none since and have now introduced them to coir. But i change it everyday just to be sure that nothing nasty is lurking. They are bloody hard work and nackering me out.......so everyone who has a Brixton LOOK AFTER IT !!! lol ;D

I'm trying to convince my mum to let me get some more snaileys. She said that if my eggs hatch I'll have to wait til I rehomed them first but then I want a margie and a tiger so any if they're any Brixtons that still need a home then I want! But not yet, when mum agrees. If not, next time ya go, keep me in mind! Shh tho, don't tell mum I told you yet! She said no more!

Mike do your Brazilian snails shit in the soil rather than on top of it? My Megalobulimus do which is annoying because it is extremely hard to keep clean. These are the only snails I have that burrow to poo.
