I'm curious to see what responses people get to their love of snails.

From my dad, disbelief 'What you wanna keep them for? They don't do anything!'.
From my boyfriend, accusations of being a weirdo and loving my snails more than I love him.
From a surprising amount of people, 'Thats' cool! How do you look after them? What do they eat?' which is reassuring ;D
But from the same amount of people, 'Ew! They slimy!' just cos them not furry munchkin animals. State the obvious....

i don't find that people are disgusted by them as such, but they're just not interested at all, which is unfortunate as i can go on about them for hours.

LOL! Good question! ;D Most people are a little shocked, but once I talk a little about the snails, they seem genuinely interested (to one degree or another). A couple of people have actually asked me how to take care of them so they could get some of their own. I think I helped educate them to see snails in a whole new light.

2 year old daughter: "oooooh" she'll only touch the shell though. Kids in my english class: "can you bring your snails in again...go on...please"
Most people who know I have them are cool about it.

Mmm... well some people think its quite cool and some say eww !! gross !! my mrs thinks they`re "just snails" but sometimes takes an interest, but I keep them beacause I love them so any unkind comments just go in one ear and out the other ! I do think that people that take the time to love and look after snails that "dont do anything" are a special breed though......

most people think it's a bit odd but I took them to work once ( I work with kids, thought they'd be interested). All the kids loved it but the parents didn't want to know. My son's 2 and hhe loves them and my fiance thinks they're cool.

It's started to get about a bit what I've started to do so now I'm getting some reactions. The people at work think I'm weird. Most don't say anything but there are one or two who ask a few questions - mainly Why? Although in one case the guy said he had a pond and if I fancied aquatic snails or frogs to give him a shout. I get the feeling he'd like to do this kind of thing but his wife and daughter wont let him. I may take him up on his offer next year. The family (Mum, Dad and sister) think I'm odd but then say at least I have an interest and don't just sit in front of the telly all the time. The people I live with go eeew!! and won't come anywhere near, especially if they are out of the tank while I'm cleaning or feeding.

MY sons think they're cool but partly I think they just like it that snails make me happy. I don't catch them talking to the snailies or anything - they are interested though. At work, one person can't wait for the babies to grow so some can go and live with her and everyone else thinks I'm barking!

The reactions of my friends and neighbours vary wildly. My friend Janet likes them, she will go and take a sneaky look if I go out of the room, my Partner, Lou, likes them, although when I first got them she thought I was a bit weird for doing so.
Sylvia, my downstairs neighbour, shudders when she sees them, and won't go anywhere near them.
Mike liked them so much, he asked me for a couple of mine.
Wayne, likes them, said they're "cool", and has ordered two of my babies when they are big enough to re-home.
Most other friends and casual visitors, seem to be neither "for or against" them.

i get three reactions: my neices (mainly chloe) adore them and won't leave them alone when they visit my parents and all my friends but one hate them and think i'm a total nutcase, as do most aquaintances. the rest of my aquaintances are neutral as are most of my family.

I haven't got snails yet, but I've mentioned other things before like getting a stick insect, or moving abroad to the Faroe Islands or something, and they'll automatically assume I'm weird. Just because I don't like Spain and dogs. ;D Mum thinks it's odd that I'm interested, but to be honest, a lot of people expect it from me.

Well my snail love makes some think I am a little weird, cruel has come up, people thinking it is cruel to keep them as pets. No one will touch them or let them crawl on their hands, and the word gross often comes up. One friend though is excited about having her own I have put together a terrarium for her and some snails.

My son was bemused at first but now calls them by name, some people look at you in a strange way as if you have totally lost the plot, others think that snails are unclean in some way. Children are usually very interested. It is sad that some people can consider a harmless creature to be disgusting, but it their loss.

yes its funny how people react to snails, in my case the only one in my family who loves the snails is my grandaughter, who is seven years old and oh yes my sons girlfriend she thinks they are cute, but the rest of my family my other sons and daughters think i have lost the plot, and cannot understand why i love them, i must admit its only in the past year i have just developed a love for snails, although one of my sons is beginning to warm to them, lol. my sister when she visits cannot stand the sight of them, oh get rid of them she says what the hell do you want them round you for oh its disgusting, to which i just start laughing, she too thinks ive gone quite mad, most people are shocked when they come in my house and see the snails, well i dont care what people think i love them, they have their own sort of personality, and are lovely to watch, i talk to my snails, my kids think its not right lol mum youve really lost the plot, what ever next , i just take no notice,

oh i forgot ... thats it i always get told what do you what to keep them for they dont to anything for you, but they are wrong they have a very calming effect on me. Same here! I don't know how I coped without a snail in my room. My mother isn't keen on snails. She doesn't hate them, just doesn't understand why a teenager, let alone a grown woman, would want to keep one. She thinks I've brainwashed my sister, I think. My father watches them when he comes in my room for a chat. I think he's secretly missed having snails in the house, too. My brother watches them too, but makes comments to see if he can get a reaction - "When can we eat them?" "Ugh! Aren't they ugly!" etc. It was my sister who bought them and we share the responsibilities and costs. She's always liked animals, including snails, and that might be partly my fault. On saying that, the only wild birds that really interest her are puffins and birds of prey, while I like all birds of all kinds and sizes. I do wish that thrushes didn't eat molluscs, though.
