Hi all Im new to this snail lark but have been keeping and breeding reptiles for a few years. I was wondering if placing a small bowl of CALCI-SAND in with my snails is a reliable way of supplementing their intake. I ask as I sprinkled some over the surface of their substrate and they have since been eating loads but also crapping it as well.
many thanks
Iain

Sand itself is probably too dry for snails as a substrate. Likely they are eating it because of the calcium in it, and of course they are going to poo it back out again.
I wonder if the particles are small enough that they would not lodge somewhere in the snails' digestive tract and cause a blockage?

I don't think it's actual sand, it's calcium carbonate. That's what snail shells are made of, so it should be perfect for them.

Calci sand is pure crushed calcium carbonate which is digestible. All my lizards/geckos eat it without any problems at all. I usually buy a 25kg sack every couple of months during the summer months when breeding season is in full swing. Iain

I assume you can get it from most pet shops, the guy at my local shop orders me a sack whenever I need it. I know most reptile/exotics shops stock smaller bags in a wide range of extremely unnatural colours.

I'd be concerned about the dyes used to make the sand different colors, and if they would be toxic to snails.

lol - i do "like" the way you can tell what a snail has been eating litterally coz of its poop (i know i know im strange) - tbh i think i would be VERY wary to the point of not trying anything that was "fake" coloured with the snails i just wondered - when somebody posted up the pics of the yellow tree snails 1 of my LOs asked if we could paint shaggy & scooby pink LOL girls eh
