well that's a bit selfish. just because they live in a different country they are automatically excluded from all competitions that involve GALS? think, Ryan.

If you can`t be respectful, don`t post. This thread is a nice productive thread for competition ideas.

If we had a photo competition, I don't think it would be restricted to just GALS, it would be for all snail types, so everyone with snails could participate.
I don't think it's very practical to have prizes. Even if someone were willing to donate a prize for the competition, the winner might not want it. It used to be that the winning photo would be displayed on the front page of the PetSnails website; I think that is a good enough 'prize'.
I'd be willing to make a new photo competition for this month, but will there be enough participants?

I would participate.
A lot of you have pointed out that the winner might not want the prize or would be unable to accept it because of his/hers nations laws. As in any other competition, I think you deside what the prize would be before the competition and display it with the info. That way everyone knows what the prize would be and thoose who don't want it or can't accept just don't apply or just turn it down if they win and it goes as a second prize in next competition. Whatever the prize is some people wouldn't want it but a lot of other people would want it. The prize is there to trigger people and if it's specific it's better I think. A gift card in all honour but it don't really trigger the "I WANT" button.
If a snails the prize, a lot of people would want it and a lot would hesitate because they don't have the means to keep it, either they live in the states or their partner thinks they got enough snails e.t.c. I'm probably not making any sense but my point is; The prize is there to trigger people to participate and if someone don't want the prize they just dont participate(or just turn the prize down if they win). There will always be people who dont want the prize. Also the prize musnt be the same thing every time, one competition it could be a live snail another competition it could be spagnum moss or a heat mat.
And also, I agre with lotsofsnails, the prize dosent have be more than having your picture showned on the website. I would most probably participate in the competitions whatever the prize was.

First of all, I was alarmed to see this thread heat up while I was out of town yesterday, but I'm glad to see things have cooled off in the meantime. I hope that any future differences of opinion among members can be expressed considerately and respectfully. I think we are really all on the same page here with our love for snails, and the bottom line is we should all work together to promote snail-keeping and the sharing of information with each other.
Personally I have mixed feelings about prizes. If most of the folks here want them, then let's try to find a way to make it happen without it becoming crazy-making. If it's going to be a hassle then all the fun goes out of it and there's no point to it.
My thoughts regarding an "inappropriate" prize: one possibility is the the winner could request the prize to be awarded to someone else they designate, or to anyone else in general. I've seen that done on other (non-snail) websites that run contests.
If people feel the prestige of having their pic be chosen for the main website's pages is enough of an award, that makes things a lot easier for everyone, and it's something I myself would be happy with.
Another thought: there is more than just a photo comp. People who are artistically inclined could do drawings or paintings or even little sculptures of snails for an art comp . . . people could write poems or short stories about snails for a writing comp . . . etc. There are probably a couple of other ideas I haven't thought of yet, too. So there are a lot of options here regarding what kinds of competitions to run.

ERM , with reguards to this compotision i thought the prize could be something very small like maybe a www.says-it.com/seal/circle.php of a snail ( btw there is 3 snail options) and put this on their profile saying Blah won The shinyest snail award and have that posted for them only i dunno i think we are getting a bit to complicated sending snails around the world and tanks are expencive, oh well just my thoughs bye

The last time I looked at that seal site they didn't have any snail emblems. Glad to hear they have some now!
