My black/blue shelled helix pomatia Pjotr have had a mantle collapse yesterday evening, it looked really bad then and I thought of utilising him. Today he have been much better and has been active and eating but now tonight he seems worse again so i'm quite worried. He has earlier had a mantle collapse a couple of months ago from which he made a full recocery except that his shell growth after the incident have been slightly bumpy. I don't know what caused this or the earlier collapse, perhaps his shell mutation, I don't know. However I've done all I can so now the only thing I can do is wait and hope. He's one of the favourites so he would be very missed if things would go bad.

I'm not sure if he's better today. The mantle seems to have attached itself to the shell again but it's awfully swollen now.

The only thing you can do is bath him daily, make him as comfartable as possible, and makesure he keeps eating, also needs caluim such as cuttle thats the best advice i have for you, Goodluck.

At the moment it's like the internal body is to big for it's shell and have push the mantle 3-5mm out of the lip. It's seems to be fully attached again, I think it was more of a mantle rip than a mantle collapse. However I don't think it's the internal body that swollen but the mantle itself. I think he'll make it but thats a big maybe at the moment.
Now while I was typing the mantle retracted in a bit as Pjotr became active but it's still out by 2-3 mm, it still looks attached. It seems like your magic rays work coyote.

a little update. He's still very swollen around the mantle but it seems like he's trying to make newshell on the swollen parts. I don't know if it's a reflex as the mantle is exposed but I have given him some more calcium in the form of liquid calcium and nutrobal. I've placed his container so he has acces to uv light and I keep him with good humidity so he dont dry out. Hopefully he'll survive but with some bad shell growth, but as long as he lives I'm happy.
Anyone else who have noticed shellgrowth dissorders in relation to mantle problems?

This is quite amazing, after lying allday half dead with his mantle hanging out Pjotr have by this time made a complete recovery. I really thought he would die, I was considering however to euthanize him or not and then after haven't checked on him for a couple of hours I go check and there he is up and about eating lettuce! And no sign at all where the rip in the mantle was and completly back in his shell again. I'm very happy but still very surprised!

I'm so glad Pjotr is doing better! A mantle tear can heal, with luck, and it sounds like Pjotr was lucky! My aspersa Buster had a swollen mantle for a while, but I didn't notice any shell problems related to it.

Thanks guys, he still seems completly ok now in the morning so has been returned to his friends in his normal tank. Now they all are sitting munching lettuce together. Only signs of the mantle tear is 1 mm of new shell that have been grown a bit iregular.
