Sasha my fairly new jaditzi has several things wrong with her. She has not eaten since i got her, took two hours to coax out last night and is very very skinny, probably about a third of the fatness she should be (although with not eating no wonder). Shes barely ever coming out, its really taking ages to get her out (I am leaving her for the most part though , to conserve her strength), and she's very deeply retracted all the time (the pic below is after coaxing her forward loads, i could not even see her before she was that far back). Also she has a funny coloured sort of red mouth (no pics i'm afraid, she won't stay out enough for me to get one). I'm keeping her warm, right humidity and everything, tried loads of foods and stuff, both mushed and un mushed, but to no avail. She sort of rears back when her mouth touches anything. I've had lots of problems with snails before, but never with this combo of symptoms and very rarely this bad. I know shes 99% probally going to die, but I would like some idea of what this is. I'm very worried its a disease, and that despite full quarantine etc it will spread. sorry for the bad pic quality. If anyone has any idea what this could be please let me know. edited due to bad spelling SEARCHdeep_retraction SEARCHnot_eating

Im so sorry this has happened, when i did have her she would retract butn ot very often and never fully in the shell like that and she didnt have a red coloured mouth. I really cant think what wrong she was quite fine when i sent her, eating, active. Gary recently died and he showed these symptons these last few days.

It dont really sound like a swollen mouth or broken radula, but on your description it seems like the mouth is iritated and causing pain and in that way prohibiting it to eat anything- thus dying from starvation. I have no idea if it could be a disease but I've had problems with an epedemic where the mantle got reddish and swollen on multiple h.pomatia. perhaps it could be something like that?
it's also possible that the radula is damaged(perhaps during postage) and that the damage has been infected and then becoming irritated. It could also be genetical as jadatzis earlier have been known to be weak from being breed albino-albino.
The only advice i can give is to quarantine as it could be a contaigeous to your other snails. It do sound like a disease if also gary showned the same symptoms.

I really hope she gets better, you could try get her out of the shell by offering a drop of beer to get her out then rinse the mouth. Gary didnt have the disease when i had sasha so i dont know? I feel guilty as if its my fault but she was fine when i sent her.

I had an aspersa that developed a dark red mouth just prior to passing away. She stopped eating and did that rearing back thing, recoiling almost violently from any food she tried to eat. I thought her mouth had been irritated from grazing on a pine branch in her tank, but that may have been just a coincidence. I've heard of other snails, including GALS, developing red mouths prior to stopping eating, deeply retracting and then passing on. AFAIK, none of those snails had pine branches in their tanks. So sorry about Sasha.
