I had a ferret once. It was an awesome pet, but it got epilepsy and the vets in my country didn't know how to treat epilepsy on such a small animal. They only had medicine for cats and dogs. I won't be taking any ferrets anymore, since they can't have correct treatment if they get ill.

What part of the US do you live in?
WRT PAWS, it's my understanding that they do not actively obtain animals. Other animal agencies and organizations (humane societies, rescue groups, police and other law enforcement departments) wind up with animals they need to place, and PAWS is one of the many sanctuaries to be contacted to see if they can accept the animals.

I won't be taking any ferrets anymore, since they can't have correct treatment if they get ill. My cat has epilepsy and the vet told us she's actually be better off untreated. She has a fit once every month-2 months, but treating it would mean shoving a pill down her throat once a day and in the long run would be far more stressful for her. We just have to make sure she doesn't hurt herself when it happens.

That's probably the best solution for your cat, I agree. My poor ferret started to have those fits several times a day and in the end she was too tired to do anything but sleep most of the day, she started to lose weight, wouldn't eat or play etc. I took her to the vet to be euthanized, otherwise I think she would have experienced a slow death. It was a really difficult decision to make but as there was no medication to make her better, I didn't have much choice.
I might just have had bad luck with my ferret, I understand epilepsy isn't at all common with ferrets. I hope my story won't discourage anyone else from having a ferret, they are really adorable and awful lot of fun. I kept mine free in my apartment, I only put her in a cage at night because she would have wanted to play all night long, she would crawl in my bed and nibble my toes! I made a small hammock out of fabric for her, hanged it in her cage and she would sleep there. If I slept too late, she started to rattle the cage and demanded to be let out for the day. She was like a dog and a cat rolled into one neat package. She knew her name and several other words too, she learned some simple tricks etc. We had so much fun, I miss her a lot. She had so much personality, I haven't seen anything like that in any of my pets afterwards. ( We have 2 cats and 2 dogs )

Ok - I know this is an older thread, but I've only been here a few days Oh my goodness - Crossless - you've got a Chaussie (cat) if I'm correct! She is absolutely stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can I have her, please, please, please??? lol Just kidding! My dream pet would probably be either a tarantula (mexican red knee) or a corn snake, but both parents are against this lol - so sticking to snails and gerbils for the moment lol. Tarantulas, when kept well, make good pets, so I've heard of others. Corn snakes make great pets too, I have two of them. They appreciate a quiet house, or at least a quite room, perhaps tarantulas do too, I'm not sure, but they're sensitive to vibrations so I assume so. Hopefully when you get a place of your own you can get some.
My ideal pet? When I was a child I wanted a fox and a squirrel. Now I believe they're generally better off left wild. I'd like a couple of guinea pigs but I don't have the room. I would feel guilty keeping them outside and I'd feel guilty keeping them indoors as I only have room for a small cage.
I know someone who keeps (and sells) meerkats. He has a converted room for them, but I'm not convinced it's a great idea. Don't they like to dig and have large territories to explore?

That's cool that you keep corn snakes Ness. Yes meerkat territories can be up to a 4 mile radius so they do need a lot of space and need to dig for food etc so although I like meerkats, I know I won't get some because I can't keep to their needs. Was talking to my parents last night - you'll never guess what they said. Providing I don't ask for anything ever again and keep it in the terranium, I'm allowed to get a tarantula when Squidget does pass on. So, looks like my dream of keeping a tarantula might come true after all lol . Slimeballsquidget x

Giant African Land Snail. Unfortunately, U.S. law prohibits them. ._.
Other than that, I think I would love to own a pangolin!

In our dream world, we'd all have enough room for our current pets plus all our fantasy dream pets too! ;D

A galapagos tortoise, a teacup chihuahua, two ferrets (was considering but nipping and space issues) and most of all, lots of hamsters that I could hobby breed.

Ah well fantasy pets - I'd have to say Gary the Snail from Spongebob, though the slime could be a pain-in-the-butt Oh and like MuddyDragons says - a dragon. That would be fun. Iloncia, I know this is off-topic but I LOVE your signature picture But then again not so off-topic really as I would quite like a few singing slugs....
