thats sweet. i looked after a crab for 4 years after a seagull dropped it in my garden, i still have no idea where the little guy came from, we are nowhere near the sea. i have also looked after winkles before, its fascinating to watch them a seagull, so sorry about that. what are winkles? -miley

My dad loves to eat snails. I think he likes to eat helix aspersa. In my country, Greece, some people (especially people who live in villages) eat snails. They call them "Hohli" and think they are tasty. Bleh.... I can't eat a snail...

I would (and have) happily eat snails as long as they weren't my own - I used to manage a pig farm but it never stopped me eating pork. I gave up meat for a while a few years ago but then was advised to return to it when I developed diabetes. Just for the record it is very uncommon for Lobsters to be boiled alive these days - it was found to be cruel. The new accepted method is to pop them in the freezer for a while to put them into hibernation and then destroy the brain - this kills them instantly. I don't tend to eat lobster but only because I'm usually skint! I think it's worth remembering that in several countries and cultures snails are eaten out of necessity and not pleasure - they probably don't make them into risottos though

Hi rockinsnail I understand your outrage, but I doubt anyone of us here would boil a snail alive, even those who would eat escargot. Most of us seem to take animal welfare extremely seriously, whether we are vegan, vegetarian or omnivore.
