Hello Well we have had our two baby White Jade Giant African babies a couple of weeks now and as they are only tiddly they are in an Extoterra Standard Faunarium which is basically a plastic tank with a lid. Its 37cm x 22.5 x 25cm. (I know that I will have to upgrade their tank when they get bigger). They dont seem very active at all and I wondered if they need a heatmat? Their tank has about 5cm of coir bedding which is sprayed every day with warm water. They have some cuttlefish and some calcium grit sprinkled in one corner. They also have a small amount of fresh leaves or a vegetable each day. They are either kept in a classroom or with me at home at weekends. The heating isnt on at the moment, but its May inthe Uk. They do seem to come out when they are sprayed, but its not for very long and one of them Ive never seen eat anything. Can anyone give me any suggestions, if I need a heat mat, what one earth do I get and what size? thankyou

Well how warm is it in the tank? Two things that should always be acuired when getting an animal that live in a area that is both warm and humid, is a hydrometer and a hygrometer to measure the heat and humidity The white jades you have, unless im totally of the track now, is also known as achatina fulica, the most common african landsnail as pets, and they are happy around 22-27 degrees. A heat mat should be covering half of the tank, and many people prefer to place the heat mat on the side of the tank wall (on the outside ofc). If you cant find a suitable heat mat, a regular lamp can do the trick as well, its just all about figuring out where to place the lamp to not overheat the tank

Achatina fulica and Achatina fulica var. white jade is same species but two different color forms? White jades don't grow as big as a.fulica? We in Finland keep them in same conditions that a.fulicas and they seem to be active in same conditions. I think it's best to first cover some air hole from faunabox it might dry too soon out. Then look how much temperature is inside of fauna. Achatina Fulicas have been active in 22 to 24degrees summer they have higher temperature because of summer
